Yeah, it's not a real coin... it's specially produced with extra care in proof condition solely for collectors. Oh wait, you meant the Silver Eagle? image

There are also a ton of Silver Eagle proof collectors. Far more than proof Walker collectors.

This coin picked up in price several years ago, and many have been predicting it's imminent price demise ever since, but it doesn't seem to have happened. Unlike most moderns, this one actually is a significant mintage rarity relative to the mintages of other years, and it's a very popular series.

And when it comes to coin prices, demand usually trumps supply.

Tad really pegged this one correctly. I would add another reason that prices remain stable are that the coin was disbursed primarily to collectors one at a time. You had to buy a $1,000 dollar proof coin set to get this SAE. There were only 30K of these sold. No dealer purchased this in major quantities, so the supply is not very liquid.

Remember the purchasers of this coin spent $1,000 on the set, so their motivation to break it up and sell for a profit on one coin may be low due to there economic status. Another couple of thousand probably wont make much difference to them (major generalization).

Anyway, there are always a few available if you want to pay the price. Price is combination of demand and supply. Can anyone reasonably say why a Buffalo Dollar commemorative sells for as much as it does? The mint produced 500K of these, yet they are not cheap. Lots of collector demand is my thought.
