Disturbing POP changes in Merc's- Your comments!

I took a quick peek at some of the pop figures and compared them to Pop figures I had on 3/25/03 less then 3 months ago today being 6/10/03 - I noted at least 3 dates with a noticeable jump. Being as such I was wondering what if anything that can do to value or perceived scarcity etc.

1916-P 67FB from 39 to 44
1940-S 67FB from 69 to 82
1944-P 67FB from 36 to 49

Quite disturbing jump IMHO - although I'd have likely picked up PQ example regardless, and those #'s would not mean THAT much - these jumps though still have me wondering right now......

The pops have no where to go but up, and as they climb it seems values may depreciate...... On the coins you mentioned it doesn't seem to me that the hit wil be that bad, its the low pop coins of say 3 then al of the sudden it jumps to 5, then 8,........ what happens to the person who bought when the pop was 3.....

These are NGC cross coin's. PCGS is now more then willing to cross a solid coin. Its just robbing peter to pay paul.

Since I would like to buy one of each in 67FB, I hope it lowers the price for a short period, just long enough for me to get them, then goes back to where they were! I've been searching for a while for a really nice blast white 16-P in 67FB, but though the pops have increased, seems so has the price!

I noticed you got a steal Marc on your 44-P in 67FB. Lucky for you, I was asleep at the switch! I had intended to put in a bid.

It these are really NGC crosses, then does PCGS let NGC know so they can lower their pops?

    Marc,

I'm not so surprised. The '16-P was hoarded as the first year of issue, and there are still original rolls of the '40-S and '44-P that have been since the year of issue. Lucy is correct - the pops of nearly all coins have nowhere to go but up.

This brings up an interesting topic: What percentage of MS65 or better Mercs from the 1940's do Forum members think have been slabbed? I'd guess somewhere around 25-33%, with a higher percentage for pre-1940 dates and an even higher percentage for key dates. The others are in rolls, old-time collections, or owned by people who just don't like slabs. I'd like to hear others' thoughts on the subject.

some interesting comments here....makes alot of sense....

Wayne, I doubt pcgs lets ngc know and viceaversa - its is indeed peter robbing paul but then I'd rather have a merc in a pcgs holder period - so I wonder how off those pop #'s are altogther - I would think about 25-30% have been crossed, discarded or whatever - wonder if that figure makes sense to others??

Lucy that kind of jump is indeed frightening, I don't recall seeing that a pop 3-4 going to 6,7,8,9 ....

I did snatch that 44-P in 67FB - no words as I was in a silly stupor for days - I was bidding on another 44-P same grade and was outbid by a fellow board member ...the price was way up then I was happy at least one of us got it - but lo , following day another showed up on Ebay - described as superior and which I won for hundred LESS, and when I received it I went bananas image , teaches you stuff happens for a reason!

Jim your numbers seems right - I wonder whats in store for us down the road - I have not been collecting mercs for that long but it seems the rises in POP have been happenning only last few years.....?

Welcome Mercateer, are you the new Merc member wooed into this exclusive clubimage ?
