Sharing a new addition with the Merc crowd!

marcmoishmarcmoish Posts: 6,292 ✭✭✭✭✭
Slightly toned down Merc crowd here these last few weeks, so I thought I'd share a really super Merc I was lucky in winning. Its a 1934 MS-67FB with toning described as borders with variegated russet patina - its a highly lustrous example, totally super strike, truly flawless fields - would have graded a solid 68 if not for a minute contact mark the size of a tick on reverse above the B in Pluribus....this coin totally rocksimage

Nice coin--though I prefer "white," it's really easy to see what attracted you to that coin. It's a keeper. You say you "won it." Where was it being auctioned?

I also see that you didn't stop with up-grading just one coin. You added a one (23-P) and up-graded another (41-D). You've been a busy boy! And, a BAD boy because your collection is now much father ahead of mine! image Actually, isn't it a great feeling to be able to make 3 significant increases in your collection. What fun!!

    Great for you!

I'm stuck in a rut. Can't find anything, but I sent in a couple of raw coins.

Your always welcome JB !! - I think I'll smack youimage - if thats an FB its a done dealimage

    Mark,
I admit I've been bad, and yes I agree with your statement - I'll buy a toned or all white example - whichever is more original, PQ in preservation and eye appeal, and if nec I will indeed upgrade or update. I won that example in the last Heritage sale.

Thanks Dennis - I'm in love with these Merc's - the wife and kids think I've lost it!

    Tony,

Any of them stand a chance for decent entries to your set?

Nice addition Marc! I'll bet it looks even better when you get it in your hand. I do understand your facination with the Mercs, and have the same problem with the wife and kiddo! It is a good thing that they don't know or care IMHO. My wife would freak if she knew what I've spent on Mercs in the last year!

I managed to buy 3 upgrades this week. 1941-S in 67FB, 1942 in 67FB, and 1945-D in 67FB. All blast white with cartwheel luster and supposedly PQ for the grade. Hopefully they will get here in time for "Red Friday", and live up to the sales pitch. I think they will, as I've bought several very nice coins from this dealer in the past.

It would nice to see another "Red Friday". I have an upgrade coming - 44-S in 68 and a 17-S add in 65. Hopefully they will arrive soon. I dont think I am passing, but consolidating my position at 19... where I belong.

    DeepCoin:

If you are up-grading, I am #18 and I am starting to become worried. Personally, I think these new coins of yours probably won't be up to standard and so should be promptly returned... Yeah, and I also wonder if you asked my permission to upgrade and likely pass me... Oh, and right, ah.. red Friday's are now so passe--so outdated. Plus, maybe you want to start a new set with these new coins..yeah, that's the ticket, start a new set!! Don't add them to your old set!!

    Mark,

A 1 point upgrade on a coin weighted 1 is not going to move me very much. Wouldn't it be funny if I ended up .01 ahead because of that. Not sure what happens when I add my 17-S. But it is all part of the fun. Staying on the first page is no longer a simple task.

FYI, for anyone who is new, "Red Fridar" refers to a previous version of the Registry and it took a couple of days for PCGS to update the sets and ratings. The updates tended to occur on Fridays, thus the term Red Friday. Many of the top sets were just being built then and additions were much less expensive and more available.

All these additions, and talk of a Red Friday - I can't take it!!image It's been awhile since I had an addition or upgrade. Guess it's my own fault; I was snoozing when a nice '35-S was auctioned a week or so back. If I can't find any Mercs soon, I may break down and get a new camera instead. The old one does an OK job, but doesn't capture the detail like some of the newer models.

    But I digress....

Congratulations to all of you who have been able to add to your sets. Sounds like you've picked up some beauties.

    DeepCoin:

I posted the following in another thread, but I see that it really belongs here:

    You sly dog!!!!

Your added coins pulled you 0.01 ahead of my set!!Gosh darn it, I guess we could get closer but I have no idea how! And, to top it all off, I asked my wife to get a commemorative half for me for Father's day rather than a Merc. But, it's amazing to me that our sets rank so close together.

So, I ask in a small, trembling voice, "You don't happen to have any more coins on the way, do you?"

Also, CONGRATULATIONS on your MS68 44-S dime--it must be a stunning piece!
