Cost of a show

Hopefully this will not cause a Flame Out War.
How may collectors would attend a show if they had to pay the same amount to be there as most dealers do?
Roughly $250-$1000 or more per show, just wondering. image

If I knew I'd be raking in obscene profits like all coin dealers do, I'd pay it.

There you go.... to help get it going a little more , the dealers make that 250.00-1000.00 off the quick flip of one coin.

What 's the cost to attend a show, anyway? ( for us collectors, that is )

    Russ forgot the smiley! image

My guess is that no one would pay that kind of fee to get into a show, not even the world's greatest cherrypickers, primarily because no dealers would attend such a show knowing how few (if any) people would attend!

    Dave,
I get ticked when I have to pay $4 to attend the Cleveland show.

For me to attend and setup at a show it costs $500 for the table (average), $325 for airfare (average), $300 for a hotel (average) and $150 for meals. there are other smaller expenses like parking at the airport $50-75, phone calls to wife and kids, etc.

so it looks like roughly $1300-$1400 just to show up and sell some coins.

It's also a cost of doing business that gets passed onto the coin show attendees anyway.

  • John, i don't blame you for getting upset when you have to pay admission fees to go into a show, i have payed the fee for several customers by knocking off $5 on coins they purchased from me and i tell them i'm doing that, i believe it will help to generate good will and also intice them to become repeat customers. image You sure can't do that on a $20 coin though!

But haw much business gets done before the collectors show up? How many coins change hands between dealers? How many dealers go to shows for exposure? There are a lot more reasons that dealers go to shows, sure selling coins is one of them. But I think one of the biggest reasons is to buy/sell/trade with other dealers!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Its hard to imagine any "valid" reason why an attendee should be expected to shell out $250 or more to attend a show.

  • We are having our annual coin club show in Greenville, Tx. on June 21st. Approx. 40 tables. with back ups, 6' isles. The cost of a table is $50.00, we DO NOT charge the public to see the show. There is no parking charge. Just a few thoughts.

Agree with MadMarty about dealers doing shows primarily for dealer-to-dealer business. I have been to shows where a dealer takes a table, puts three slabs in a display case, and is never seen again. He's out on the floor buying and selling with other dealers.
