Wow its been years since I have read a Coinage and 50% of those names ring bells in my memory of more care-free days of low budget raw when dip was something perfect for bags of Lays (before cans) .image

My only experience has been with Coast to Coast. Bought two slabbed Morgans from them. Service was pretty good as I recall. Seems that they are intent on using up their profits mailing those nice glossy catalogs to me. Can't say that I have done business with any of the others.

There are a few good ones in your list but for the most part these dealers sell junk. mike

I alwasy recomend sight seen buying. You can't see the coin from any advertisement.

If you know the dealer and have done busness with them before on a one on one basis, that's different.

One exception is R&I coins when dealing with high end pop tops.

I think I would trust that coin company.

On the other hand, some on the list, I won't say anything more.

I bought a roll of SAE from Paul Sims once when they had a speacial. Since then nothing though, but they did send me those catalogs in the mail for about a year.

Harold Weitz - tends to overgrade on Ebay. Watch out for shills. Several years ago I busted them for shilling (back in the days when you could get contact info on anyone). His son was bidding up his auctions. Being a power seller, he only got a 30 day suspension.

Most of those on the list, I would rather pass, or I d dont know?

However, Jack Beyemer is a great guy, very honest. His pricing is strong retail, but the coins he sells are nice and of good quality.
    VERY FAIR RETURN POLICY

I bought an Xf-45 1924-s buffalo from him once, and paid very high retail for it. About a month later, I found one In AU that matched my set better. I called him and asked if he would be intrested in buying it back, so I sent it back and he said Ill give you a full refund on your purchase price.

    ahhh

Trying to evaluate the advertising budget, huh? image

Nah, but seriously, I've purchased mail order a couple of times many moons ago, but no more. I only give the ads a casual glance, and a few choice words when half the paper is ads, but here's something you may find useful, if you are evaluting:

I hate ads that give no indication of who is behind the company, and
as I opened the 6/9 issue for an example, it looks like every ad NOW indicates what they have, where they are, and at least one name. It sure wasn't always like that, so my gripe MAY be obselete now. image

Before you buy from Coast to Coast, I would recommend looking into why they are no longer ANA members.

I've dealt with R & I coins before, and liked what they provided- but I'm not interested in buying anything sight-unseen through a magazine advertisement....
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !
  • Names from my past. Oh boy, on a scale of one to ten, I'd only give Jack Beymer a 9 cause his prices are too high but he's such an old timer I enjoy talking to him and still pick up something now and then. I've bought from most of the rest. All ones or three's except Coast To Coast which rates a flat zero for misrepresentation.

Have learned who to stay away from mostly, but have had the following experiences:

New World Rarities: Kind of pushy, but they talked me into buying SMS Kennedys when they were cheap, so I can't complain. Turned a good profit on those.

Gallaway Bay: Decent stuff, and the owner is a stand-up guy. He sent me a duplicate order several months after I had ordered from him. Charged me for it, which made me mad, right? So, I called him up. He apologized. Issued a full credit, and told me to keep the coins he had shipped by mistake. Cool! I haven't used him much since, just because I don't collect a lot of cents these days, but I think he's an honest guy.

R&I Coins: If you want the best, and are willing to pay for it, you can't beat 'em. Great stuff...every bit as good as they describe IMHO.

Skyline: If you can't say anything nice....you know the rest. And by the way, I have a bunch of cleaned and retoned lincolns available to anyone who wants them.

Norwood Coin: The coins I got were good, just as described. My main complaint is that all of the stuff reeks of tobacco smoke. I hate it when the coins stink! For those of you who smoke, you won't notice a thing. Easy to deal with.

Sunshine Rarities: Never bought anything because every time I call about a coin in their ad, there is a lot of confusion on the other end of the line, and they haven't had any of the listed coins in stock. I know there is a lag between submitting the ad and publication, but it seems odd to me.

Those are the limit of my experience from Coinage.

  • IMO, I think for the most part they aren't very reputable, either that or it's pretty much all modern stuff for sale, you all know im not too big of a fan of modern coins, but most of they're dealers on there, look like wastes of money. Just my two cents.

I concur here, I made up a comprehensive list of all advertisers in a few coin publications and started doing a little research to see if there were any better spots to purchase coins from since I'm in the toolies. I wanted to stay away from Ebay except on slabbed material, but I've found most are into moderns and stock on anything of a true rarity seems "rare". Online I really like David Lawrence, for overall pricing and variety, high end the best is Legends.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.
  • L&C Average I have not done business with any of the others.

  • Jack H. Beymer is everything that a dealer should be; honest, friendly, consistent with a nice coins. Many people say that his prices are too high. The irony is that it is usually FAR more expensive to buy a raw MS-65 Morgan that is really a super-slider, than it is to be a conservatively graded coin at full retail.
