Presidential Review worked!

DennisHDennisH Posts: 13,995 ✭✭✭✭✭
Showed a coin to David Hall during free opinion time at the Long Beach show -- a VF35 1903 micro-S Morgan -- and asked why it wasn't XF40. (When buying the coin raw, both the seller and I agreed it was a lock-XF. When it came back a 35 I wondered if I was losing my coin grading mind. After showing it to a few dealers and several friends, everyone agreed that PCGS was losing its coin grading mind.)

He answered, "Well, I could point to this and this, but I have to admit I understand what you're saying." He then turned to his right-hand assistant Sandy Locker and said "Write this up as a no-charge Presidential Review."

Well, I just checked the coin's certification number with the PCGS database and it now shows up as XF40. imageimageimage

HOORAY! I wasn't crazy after all. Well... at least not in this instance. image

I know he is president and all, but should he have the right to upgrade a coin? I thought coins were reviewed by a few people before a grade is assigned.

Either way, congrats on the upgrade

Hello sonof-a-gunk! (The PCGS system wouldn't let me post your name the correct way... the combination of F, A and G are on its forbidden list!)

My strong hunch is he did not upgrade the coin himself, but merely put it into the system where the graders made the actual determination. I can picture him saying to one of them, "Doesn't this look like a 40?", but I really don't think his involvement went beyond that.

Moving me up to the head of the line was VERY nice, though! That will take some of the sting out of the 60-day wait for my Economy order.

I hate to be the barer of bad news, but the economy wait estimate is now 65 days. I checked my invoice a couple of days back and that was the post that greeted me.

Congrads on the "upgrade." I think we all have a few that are undergrade. Some of us even have a few that are overgraded image.

I am glad to see that HRH is doing the right thing. PCGS needs to listen to his customers.

Great news DennisH. Sometimes it gets frustrating, but it is nice to see the process works. mdwoods

    Congratulations.

My understanding on Presidential Reviews is that David looks at it. If he decides the grade is correct, that's it. Then he just writes up the reason and has it sent back. If he decides an upgrade is warrranted, I'm not sure what happens. Does it just get upgraded on his decision, or does he then go to the graders to see if they agree. Does anyone know?

What happens if you try to downgrade a coin on Presidential review, or send two coins in, the nicer one in the lower grade holder.

    Anyone have experience with that???

I know that the whole oint of the thread is the Presidential review and how well it was all handled... I think everyone should be pleased about that.

A 1903-s micro Morgan in ef40 is not a common coin. Good luck if you continue to look for VAM Morgans.

  • Let us not trivialize what Dennis did before he even attempted to get the Presidential review. He obtained opinions of several coin graders before he went to see David Hall. The fact that David upgraded merely confirms there is a little order to the universe that more than one coin grader can agree on a grade.

Congratulations on getting the correct grade.

I contacted PCGS awhile ago and they told me there was either a presidential or round table review for $50. For that, the coin stays in the same holder and if it warrants an upgrade, it's reholdered. If not, it's returned back to you in the same holder. This service must be requested on the submission invoice and they only meet once a month. Good luck! Ray
