HOW WOULD YOU FEEL?

How do you think you would feel if PCGS took over 60 days to grade your coin that you submitted at a show with the reason stated that they had to have the coin reviewed by independent consultants?????????????

True story!!!!!!!

What's an independant consultant? Did they explain? Was it an extremely rare coin?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

If they weren't sure, I would be happy to have them take their time and get it right.

Maybe they're sending coins to NGC for quicker grades and then slabbing the coins themselves. image

It was an off metal lincoln. Rare - yes. Independent consultants were supposed to be dealers and individuals in the industry. Maybe some of you dealers were selected?

How frequent is this practice practiced? Anybody else ever heard of this????????

I have heard of this happening before. A certain dealer was discussing with me his frustration with PCGS on a very similar issue. He sent in a very rare higher grade silver plug HALF dollar for grading. One of a very few known. PCGS told him that they had to get a specialized experts opinion on the coin.

In my opinion, it is frustrating but I am happy that they would take the time to do this (at no extra cost to the submitter mind you) to make sure that they get it right. Even though there is a wealth of numismatic knowledge at PCGS, there are some esoteric areas in numismatics that even the graders dont know about and need consultation on.

Pain in the butt? Yes. Worth it to keep a counterfeit out of your holders? An even bigger yes.

I think the "independant consultants" in this case might be metallurgists capable of identifying exactly what composition the planchet was thru non-destuctive testing of the coin.

Even PCGS needs a little help in a field outside their expertise.......and in this case it may be important to correctly identify which planchet was used as it could concievably have been a foreign coin planchet.

Joe hit it right on the head... I bet they are going to test the composition.

    lincoln Sense,

The outside consultant is Fred Wienburg ( spelling?) their error specialist. PCGS sends him any error coins. It is normal procedure and they have been doing this for some time now.

Fivecents (Paul) is right. I've sent them error coins and they always take an extra long time to reduce the chances of making a mistake.

I'd be happy that they are doing their best to do it right.

It didn't go to Fred. It was a copper in a holder. No testing, just opinions sought. I still think its absurd what they did.
