New World Record for 1975 Topps baseball Card!!

Congratulations to Steve Pekovich as seller (Pekovich f/k/a bauerfan) and Jeff Brewer (redsoxjeff) as high bidder for this gem. To the best of my knowledge, this is the highest price paid for a 1975 Topps Baseball card.

I was just going to post on this. What's the deal? Pop. is 7 and more are sure to show up. SMR is $550.
  • mcastaldimcastaldi Posts: 1,235 ✭✭✭
And until very recently, the pop was only 4.

That's a nice looking card! I'm not sure about the price (is it really $1300+ nicer than my PSA 8), but both buyer and seller are top notch - congratulations to both.

    JEB.
  • What's incredible is that there were 3 separate bidders over $1,200. I don't know 1975 values that well but I know the 74 Ryan psa 9 wouldn't bring anywhere near half that much.

While I would also like to offer my congratulations to both the seller and the buyer, for $1300+ I can think of many cards that I would rather own. Most of the high dollar star cards in the 54 - 69 sets can be bought in PSA 8 for that kind of change.I would suspect that a relatively nice Rose rookie would command that kind of money also.I guess that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It really is an exceptional card and one that the buyer can be especially proud of.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

I think that price is accurate. A Pop 7 with 989 submitted makes it the toughest card in the set. Much tougher than the Schmidt which has sold as high as $1000. If the population doesn't explode on the Ryan anytime soon, $1300 is a good deal. I would expect the next one to go higher if the Pop is still 7 when it sells.

Without one of the underbidders involved, you are looking at more like $700.

David> As wabbitwax alluded to, for a LONG time the of any 1970s issue the 75T was the toughest Ryan to pick up in PSA9 NQ. Combine that with the fact that the example Steve just sold is probably the nicest 75 Ryan you're likely to see. On that card it can have a dark cast to it, and if it isn't the purples tend to be faded and "blah". VERY tough card in terms of finding one with truly outstanding eye appeal. The Ryan and the Aaron (#660) are among the toughest HOFers from 75 to find in PSA9.

Now that I think about it, the $1378 may or may not be a record. I seem to remember one dealer selling a #660 Aaron PSA9 at National last year for about that price.

  • I'll offer a perspective of someone who wanted the card, but unfortunately didn't bid enough to win it. As a Ryan collector I want to fill my main Topps issues with at least PSA 9's. As it stands I need the 68 Topps (which I have a BVG in crossover grading now), the 75 Topps, and the 78 Topps. The 75 Topps is far and away the lowest pop, despite its population nearly doubling in the last few months. I was kicking myself big time for not having bid more than $850 on the 75 PSA 9 from a few weeks ago. As I sit here typing this I actually reget not having bid at least $1500 for it. This is a tough card to find in Mint 9 and I hope someone is willing to put another out there.

I believe someone in the thread made a comparison that the 74 Ryan wouldn't bring half the money the 75 Ryan did. There is a reason the 74 Ryan will never command a price like the 75 Ryan. Its the fact that there are 50+ PSA 9 of the 74 and there are 2 Gem Mint 10's of the 74. Big difference in ones ability to acquire something that there are only a few of versus something that pops up once a month.

My congratulations go out to Jeff B., he wanted it more than I did!

    Mike:

You are correct. While close, this is not the highest price paid for a 1975 PSA 9 card. At the National last year, I saw a 1975 Topps PSA 9 #660 Hank Aaron sell for $1,500! The asking price was $1,750 and the deal was closed for $250 less.

Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10.

  • There were three bidders over $1,200 . . . but there were only three bidders over $720 as well.

One advantage that Steve had is that the scan is absolutely top-notch. Even though the centering isn't perfect, the quality of the scan allows potential bidders to see how unbelievably sharp the corners are. Just goes to show how a good scan always helps a seller.

DrNguyen> The corners are top-shelf, but. . .the other thing is that this card is VERY VERY hard to find with nice crisp vibrant colors. And this example had about the best eye appeal I've ever seen on a 75 Ryan. And looking at the scan, I'd guess the L/R centering is probably 55/45 or so.

This comes on the heels of a Carlton PSA 9 selling for a very respectable $735, also to redsoxjeff. There are only 4 of those (though the auction said 3 at the time), with no 10s out of 244 submitted. With only 7 Ryan 9s out of 4 times as many submitted, and given Ryan's popularity, if one uses the Carlton as a baseline, the $1300 could be a relative bargain. I couldn't afford it, but if I could, pekovich's weird feedback would have been a red flag, so that may have kept some people away. But another PSA 9 Carlton just showed up on ebay. It'll be interesting to see where that one lands. Between the regular high end bidders and this new guy gus72, it could be very rewarding to sell the tough star 9s at the moment.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

helio> "but if I could, pekovich's weird feedback would have been a red flag. . ."

I would argue that if you're a serious collector of 70s materials and willing to shell out that kind of green on a 75 Carlton or 75 Ryan, then I think the odds are pretty high that you already know Steve Pekovich and that his reputation is completely top-notch. I don't think his feedback rating scared off anyone who was actually serious about the card.

    Agreed
  • The 1975 Brett RC in PSA 10 sold for over $18,000 some time back - but it was a private sale
Collector of baseball PSA sets from the 1970's & hockey rookie cards; big New York Rangers fan (particularly now that they are sleeping with the enemy with Holik and Kaspiritus). Also starting to collect 53 Bowman Color as I think they are the most beautiful cards I have seen.

$18,000 for a piece of cardboard? What kind of idiot would pay that? (I know only idiots would pay that because I have done so in the past.)

  • Despite my propensity for spending sums on cards I really want, I did not buy the card for 18k, altough i have come close on a 53 bowman color - only writing this as i thought there may have been a slight cut

  • I was impressed by the Ryan price, but equally suprised when the 1 / 1 Joe Morgan 1975 Topps PSA 10 recently sold for only a bit over $700.00.
