Yes, it is amazing to see some of the prices realized for these cards! Like Art said, now we're
even starting to see some crazy prices for the 7's, too. I hope prices don't get *too* high yet
because I still need about 20 cards for my set, but I also hope this upward trend continues.

This week Topps will be releasing their heritage FB set -- 2003 Topps All-Americans, with current
players featured on cards based on the 1955 classic design. This should only add to the
popularity of the original '55 AA set. I've got 2 unopened boxes on the way and I can't wait
    to crack 'em!

And, yes, this is the greatest football set ever made!! image

Some of the PSA 7s were selling for more than some of the PSA 8 high series. image All vintage football has been selling very strong right now, even though this would be considered the off season for football cards.

Low pop PSA 7s, or PSA 8s in general, have seen increased bidding activity. The '55 Topps AA FB set has the highest population numbers and the most demand for the early vintage years (1948 -1955) . Wait until people see and realize the population numbers for the Bowman and Leaf sets.

I stopped pursuing the '55 Topps AA FB because of the EBAY bidding wars. I guess that was a wrong decision in comparison to prices from 1 year ago. I started collecting other vintage Bowman issues because I could pick up single digit population PSA 8s for a fraction of the '55 PSA 8 prices, often in the range of $40 to $80.

Jerry Cyncynatus finally broke up his '52 Bowman Small set - it was the PSA 2002 award winner. He was getting offers for 3-4X SMR on the low population PSA 8s (Davalillo?), so he decided to break up the set and sell off the rest. At those prices I can not blame him. I think that set would be harder to assemble than the Bowman Large, although the larger issue is more popular.

I think the current HOT market (which has been steadily going up for the last year) for all vintage football is just the tip of the iceberg. Eventually vintage football will have a comparative value to the baseball rookies of equal standing. I know we have talked this subject before, and the 55 All-Americans are the "leading edge" of this movement, due to their popularity among ALL football collectors. As the 55 All-Americans go, so will the rest of the vintage football.

Vintage football is hot, in general. Got some very good prices for some PSA 6-7 48 Leaf cards I sold.
  • Can you possibly imagine what the AA cards or any vintage FB will be selling like when FB season starts up again. image

Lately, I have been seriously thinking about selling my set. I don't think I would have the guts to do it though....image

    Rob,

If you sold the set, would you start another vintage set?
  • Dart:

Probably not. Right now I am presently working on 2 other vintage sets.

A 1949 Bowman BB set and a 1956 Topps FB set. Those are enough to keep my very busy.

If I were to sell it, the money would more then likely go towards buying a house.

My email is in the set breakdown.

Care to make an offer or have someone in mind to do so?.....lol

    Dart-
Jerry did sell many of his 1952 smalls to Davalillo. And he would have gotten more had he sold to the RIGHT person. He knows what I mean.

    Sixdart,

I never offered Jerry multiples of smr for any of his cards. Someone else did but he chose to include those in a larger sale to me. All in, my recollection is I bought over 50 1952 Bowman Small psa 8s and 1 psa 9. I have no idea what anyone else offered him. It gave me an opportunity to come close to finishing my set at a fair price. As Jerry would tell you, I met him at a Cleveland hotel, bought him a drink and paid for his parking too.

    Davalillo,

That is one tough set in PSA 7 or PSA 8!

I'm sure that you are quite satisfied with your purchase. If the ones Jerry sold you were as nice as the ones he posted on EBAY, you did well for yourself. You must have tremendous patience while working on your vintage football sets.

    1954,

There have been recent '52 Bowman Small PSA 8 listings on Teletrade.

    Sixdart,

Agreed. The 1952 Bowman Small is the toughest early Bowman Football set. 1952 Bowman Large is no piece of cake either--and for those really wanting a challenge try 1948 and 1949 Leaf in psa 8 or better.

Patience is a virtue in collecting any vintage set. I have enough sets underway that if the cards in one set are not available in psa 8 or bettet, I can buy them in others.

Whether its buying 50 plus 52 Bowman Smalls from Jerry or over 150 1955 Bowman Baseball psa 8s from Marc Schoneon, this is how I like to acquire cards.

Speaking of hot ... the vintage football market has been invaded by mgalt@earthlink.net. This person is the same individual who purchases Topps TEST non-sport cars, via the Topps Vault auctions, spending thousands on them!

Anyone ever have transactions with this EBAY'er? They are e-sniping with very strong bids over the last 3 days. I checked their bidding history and it appears as if they are getting into football cards. image

You can say that again. I was following some '55 AA's that closed
just now, and my jaw dropped when I saw the final prices. These
aren't just high prices, these are insane! Without the 2nd highest
bidder (gshirley70), the cards would have sold for a more reasonable
    price:

Zimmerman PSA 8 sells for $184.49!

Kercheval PSA 8 sells for $386.99!!!

Amazing!! I've never sold any of my cards on ebay, but after seeing
how this mgalt@earthlink.net bids I might be tempted to put up a few
of my PSA 8's and then re-purchase them once this buyer gets his.
    I just bought a PSA 8 Kercheval from a dealer's website for $115, so
it's good to know somebody is willing to shell out $387! image
