Attention HOF baseball set collectors

We need your expertise! We are getting ready to load a complete HOF baseball set which will include players, managers, umps, and executives. This set will require cards from the HOFer's career years which are listed after the name. HOFer's who never had cards issued within the career years will not appear on the list.

We would appreciate your review of this set before we load it. Please send us feedback if you see any inaccuracies. Thank you.

BJ I don't know if it matters but Willie McCovey and Fergie Jenkins had played longer than you list for the years that follow their names.

Thats about all I noticed so far.

    Other than that sounds great!

Looks like a great list. Just a few thoughts for consistancy:

    1) Might make sense to include the year after the players retired as well - for instance, a 69 Mantle, 73 Clemente, etc are all "real" cards issued during their playing days. Then again, most players affected by this will have plenty of other options for cards.

    2) I know there has to be a cutoff, but would 1915-16 be better to include the Cracker Jacks and M101 sets? Specially thinking of Comisky, probably his most available card is the 14-15 Cracker Jacks.

But it looks like a fun list for people to work on...would they be weighted differently based on the type of card used (i.e. more weight for a 52T Mantle vs. 68T?)
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?

That would be one awesome set to complete. I had worked on the initial Hall Of Fame set and it was quite easy to use any cards to fill the holes like a 1960 Fleer for Cap Anson, a 1950 Callahan for Dan Brouthers or a 1966 (manager card) for Billy Herman. But this compilation looks like the real deal. Great work BJ, I too appreciate all you've done for the registry and all the help you've given me...jay

Rob - Do you know what the play years were for McCovey and Jenkins?

Crazysc - I don't mind adding the year after retirement for certain players, but I would need a list. Can you provide?

I don't have a problem extending those early players to 1916. Unfortunately, this set can't be weighted under our current parameters. This is why any HOF set that does not require specific cards isn't weighted. This is why if any HOF set is to be considered for a plaque award in the 2003 Set Registry awards this year, the judges will be looking at the cards within each HOF set, not just at the GPA.

These are the players I'd add a "retirement" year to their totals. There may be others, but none with significant cards...

Off the top of my head here are some changes. I'd extend the time frame on these players, at least, to include their "final cards" as they are in the individual registries (if any):

    Mickey Mantle - 1969
    Joe Morgan - 1985
    Sandy Koufax - 1967
    Willie McCovey - 1981
    Richie Ashburn - 1963
    Nolan Ryan - 1994

    Add:
    2003 Eddie Murray 1978-1998

Don Sutton's in there twice, under 1997 and 1998. He was elected in 1998. His last cards look like 1988, which was his last playing year.

And Frank Robinson's last regular card is generally accepted as the 1975 Topps, no?
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

Also to add to your list helionaut. Bench has a card from 84 and Lou Brock has the first card in the 1980 set for making it to 3000 which he shares with Yaz.I believe that is his final card after a regular issued card from 1979.

D'oh! That must been the "Hall" in my noggin.
  • I believe this website will help you with your Hall of Fame set as well as any set that anyone could possibly want to put together. It will not help with the cards, but it will help with years played. etc.
