Congratulations to Dave Read - 1972 Topps set 100%

Thats right!

Another masochist completes th 787 card masterpiece!!! Dave's set has the 3rd highest GPA of all 72 sets ever completed with an 8.18!!! Those of us on the 72 set have been watching closely as Dave hit a wall with the last 4 - 5 cards.

His finishing touch was the Willie Mays In Action in PSA 8. A very tough card to find centered!

Great job Dave!!!!

Congratulations Dave! That set is a monster!

TRUE STORY - Dave lives about 200 yards from the house I grew up in and where my parents still live today in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh. It's a very small world folks!

  • Dave,

Having dabbled very briefly in 72's myself, I know also how daunting the task of completing seems. Your perserverence (How's my spelling on that one) is a testament to how dedicated you are to our hobby. Congratulations! Your 69' effort is also very impressive! Keep it goin'!

    Best regards,

Congrats. It's hard to believe that I once had over 30 Aaron cards and another 30+ Aaron IA cards back in the day when much of my newspaper delivery money went towards baseball cards.

Congats Dave! I am one of only 4 other people in the world (plus yourself) that knows what it is like to complete one of the biggest sets ever printed. You are a true credit to the 100% complete club or as the 72 gang like to say "THE ALL-TIME FINEST FAB FIVE". It has been nothing but a pleasure buying, selling and trading with you during this long quest. It's great to include you in our exclusive club. I look forward to the chance of meeting you and all of the other members of our club at the National next month. I believe that it would be a thrill for myself and the others to be able to share our "1972 war stories" with each other. It will also be great fun to talk with all of the other 72ers coming up the ranks. In closing, let me say that your incredable set is a testimony to your love of 1972 Topps cards and PSA as a whole. Good luck upgrading your set (if you so choose) or just sit there for awhile enjoying the inner pride that is only realized from such a massive achievement. Your friend, Neil

You and all the other "Monster" set builders are amazing. I am good friends with Jarvi, #2 set collector of 72 Topps, and he has literally been working on that set for 20+ years. It looked like a monster to collect back in the early 80s when we both took it up and it looks just as hard today. I myself could not handle the pressure and I dropped out of my chase for the 1970 set today. I unloaded my 185 cards today to a set builder that I am sure will be man enough for the challenge. I will still go after a 70 and 72 set in NrMt raw form, but that is nothing compared to the graded chase. When it is raw it is much easier to settle.

    Congrats,
    Luke

  • Thanks guys! I am finally a forum member. Looks like a lot of familiar names on here, and I look forward to gaining some new insight from all these forum vets.

On the 1972's, thanks for all the help and support over the last year Neil, Mike, Erik, and especially Frank. I will upgrade the 72's here and there, but I'm trying to get my 1969's (Dave, your killing me the last month) and 1973's up to snuff!
