1975 OPC vs "other 70's OPC" rough cuts

Folks- I've seen some discussion the past few weeks regarding the "rough cuts" of 1970's OPC baseball cards. I have a few PSA 9's from 1977, which show the telltale rough edges. I also have a '75 OPC Tony Perez in a BVG 9 holder, and am considering a crossover to a PSA 9. I've looked through a few raw '75 OPC listings, comparing them to the raw '77 OPC's I've seen on eBay. It appears the 77's have a rougher cut to them, at least as compared to the 75's. My BVG Perez doesn't appear to have been trimmed (I've meaasured it with calipers), but I'd hate to spend the $10 for the crossover service, then have them tell me "bears evidence of trimming". Anybody have crossover (or raw grading) experience with these? Thanks in advance- Scott

    Scott:

I don't have any crossover experience. I have opened a few 1975 OPC packs -- and noticed very similar rough cuts.

I would say that I own a 1975 BVG 9 #70 Mike Schmidt card that is absolutely cut from a sheet. I have a BVG 8.5 of #307 that I am equally unsure, and I am going to risk the $10- simply because I can't find decent raw examples of the card.

I've never had much of a problem with 1977 OPC. The packs I've opened have had fairly strong cuts overall. It seems like centering seems to be a more prevalent issue than anything else.

And, just as a plug -- I am paying top dollar for raw or PSA-grade 1975 O-Pee-Chee Mike Schmidt cards that are in NM or better condition.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Marc- Thanks for the info. From what I can tell, it's "hit or miss" with the rough cuts. Like I said, the BVG 9 Perez I have looks (and measures) fine, but it doesn't look like it was cut with a laser (or any other more modern cutting technique). To tell the truth, the edges don't look any different than the regular '75 Topps cards I have graded in PSA 9 condition. Don't think I'm taking much of a chance (I think I can afford the $10), but it would be nice to get a crossover to a PSA 9, as opposed to trying to track down the other 2 copies.

Wish I could help with the '75 OPC Schmidts, but this is the only '75 OPC I have. I'll make sure I let you know should I come across any Schmidts. Please do the same should you run across any Bench/Perez/Morgan PSA 9's you think I might be interested in.

Hi Mike Schmidt i was almost able to help you out. i opened 3 75 packs the a few weeks back and there was schmidt and carew back to back. Unfortunately the cards on 1 side of the pack were centered and the cards on the other were miscut . Guess which side had the schmidt and carew, the miscut side. All of the packs came out this way, at least i know they were not searched.
  • Scott,

I had the following OPC's in BVG 9:

    1977 OPC #65 Nolan Ryan
    1978 OPC #6 Ryan / Niekro
1978 OPC #241 Nolan Ryan RB
    1980 OPC #303 Nolan Ryan
    1982 OPC #90 Nolan Ryan

I now have the same five cards sitting in card saver I's with EVID TRIM on all the labels.

All 5 cards match up for size with cards I have pulled from packs, but they have no shag on the edges and the corners were all graded 9.5 by BVG. These were all bought from the same source, who I will never deal with again. Hope this information is useful. image
  • sjeanblanc- Can you tell me who you purchased those cards from? It might be the same person I bought mine from. E-mail me at gtbeaker@yahoo.com. Thanks for the info- Scott
