1957 Topps Football Mania

I have been working on this set for several months now and am having a tough time with some cards. I know there are no true short prints in the set, but I have also become painfully aware that there are some real tough cards in here. Here is one that went for 10x SMR. I know both bidders are set registrants and willing to pay just about anything for any card they need. I'm jealous.
Alex Webster probably didn't think his card would ever be worth this much
Any inside info on this particular set would be greatly appreciated. image

Although I don't collect that set, and I can't offer you any info
to help you out, I've always liked the design of that set with the
two panel design -- the Unitas rookie card in that set is one of the
all-time classic football cards in my book. By posting here,
you're definitely asking for help in the right place, and I've found
that the collectors on these boards are very helpful and knowledgable.

If you don't already have it, I'd suggest getting access to the pop
report for this set so you can see why bids go so high on some cards.
One thing I've learned in trying to build my '55 All-American set in
PSA 7 or 8 is that, for the most part, PSA 8 collectors are a different
breed. I'll see some decent competition over 7's, but when it comes
to some of the 8's you'll see bidders paying outrageous amounts, as you
have pointed out in your link. A lot of the set builders that go for
an all 8 set also usually have the big money to spend.

Great set & good luck! image

PSA population report shows 17 total submissions for this card ...

    psa 3/4........1
    PSA 6...........5
    PSA 7.......... 4
    PSA 8.......... 7
    PSA 9...........0
    PSA 10.........0

Other cards with significantly low populations (having less than 20 total submissions) ...

    # 66, # 74, # 89, # 90, # 97, #101, #112, #115, #123, #127, #132, #136, #140,
    #141, #144, #145, #152, #153.

The cards #140 and #144 appear to be the toughest to obtain in PSA 8 NM-MT.

A while back I offered you a bunch of PSA 7 and you never got back with me.

I can also help you with any questions you have on the 57's, If I don't know, I know several people who would.

I also have a nice non-graded set with the error and the checklist for sale.

See what I mean? You can't get much more helpful than
    that! image

  • I have been looking for a #94 Raymond Berry RC PSA 8 for over a year. You talk about a tough card to find in that grade. I need this card to complete my Receivers Set. I can't remember the last time one came up on ebay. I know I will have to pay over SMR for this card if I ever find it. There are only 19 PSA 8's graded and none higher. The search continues.image

  • Paul, I have been bidding against you for some 1958 football cards, although I haven't been in the ballpark (example: Marchetti PSA 8). You must be assembling one heck of a set. Let me know if you have any to sell - I think the '58 set is the best football set in the decade.

I do have a bunch I'd be willing to sell. I have them in PSA/SGC 7-8. You can reach me at paulorruth@msn.com

I have the current #1 set on the Registry, it's under Tagatz's 1958.

If the price is right I'd sell the whole set.

I am collecting this set in 7 and 8 shape, I have many cards in that range ungraded and may or may not get them slabbed. I always fear my decent raw 7 will come back a 6 or worse. A real classic, due to rookies, high numbers, short prints, and the first set in the now standard size for cards.

Per the query regarding the Webster card. About 10 or 12 years ago I decided to upgrade my complete set. Probably a dozen or so were needed to get them all in nice shape, perhaps something like a 6.5 or better using today's graded standards. I casually sought the needed upgrades through shows including a National, card shops and via ads. Some were harder to find than others, I had a bit of trouble with finding a few, like Lou Creekmur and Ken MacAfee, but really had a super tuff time locating a nice Webster. I think I finaly got one via mail order, I wish I had gotten a few copies when prices were quite low compared to today. Why so tuff ?? Who knows for sure, perhaps the location on the print sheet, the inking process/position, Etc., maybe because the Webster card is somewhat less photo friendly than most, a lot of collectors way back then did not want to keep a well preserved copy.
The final price for this PSA 8 beauty is truly amazing !! image
