he must have been upset that metsfan snagged him on the other.
  • Two points

    1) Hurray for the PSA Registry for drawing collectors like Chris to collect PSA cards
    2) Congrats to Chris for having the money to spend on high grade cards and for taking the time to not only build some of the finest 70's sets on the registry but to list some pics as well

That 71 set of his is an ABSOLUTE MONSTER. Yeah - his 70 is extremely nice, but nowhere near as tough as that Black Beauty. I'm betting that this is ones set that, once its complete, will not be challenged for years to come. No offense to Scott Tipton (who's 71 set is awesome as well) but I get the sense that Chris is on a mission with this one.

  • Obviously this dealer was fishing for Chris. I am sure if Chris did not buy them, they would never have sold for that amount.

It appears Chris has been on a buying rampage lately (I checked his bidding pattern on eBay the last month). He has spent more in the past 30 days than I'll probably spend in the next 10 years. Here are some of the "bigger $" items:

    '71 Carlton PSA 9 - $1776
    '71 Blyleven PSA 9 - $2176
    '71 Banks PSA 9 - $2096

not to mention a few dozen other $500 cards. I was unfortunate enough to also be bidding on the '71 NL HR Leaders, but my $500 bid didn't even come close.

Maybe one of these days I'll have that kind of disposable income, but I doubt it.

    Don Cherry,

Maybe true, but you can bet from here on out he will get almost first shot for every
71 in a nine. If he has the money then good for him for if he's willing to pay then
lets have him get everycard and build what his money is buying. The ultimate toughest
    set of the 70's.

    Just my 2 cents.

'Tis too bad -- I'm pretty sure Bill Goodwin had one for closer to $1,200.

Chris is a tough man to beat out on the 1971 9's. I'm always surprised when I can pick one up. My new process for bidding on these is to check if Chris has it in his set already. If he does, then I know I have a shot.

I remember a short time ago thinking that it would be tough to beat out Steve Pekovich's 1971 set. It won't be long know until Chris's set eclipses it.

Based on these bids...I don't think he's losing any sleep over it.

I hope Chris gave Novella a call first to cut a deal.....a discount off each card if he agrees to buy all of them via BIN. That way Novella does not look like a bad guy by cancelling all of those auctions and selling directly to Chris once an agreement is reached.

I doubt he ended up spending $14,025.

Makes sense to me and a win/win situation for both parties....he would of had some leverage....as there is not a huge market for $400-500 1971 PSA 9 commons.

He's probably got 'em. For those of us working on this set, the best approach is to wait for the second round of 9's to come by and let Chris gobble up what's there now.

I've emailed Chris a few times and he was nothing but cordial and kind, disclosing some background about himself. I'm truly fascinated at what he can do with his collection..and..for someone in their early 30's!

  • Wow...early 30's! I'm 31, and can't even come close to imagining what it must be like to have that kind of cash flow. Anybody know what he does for a living?

With respect to hockey I mainly collect by submitting my own raw cards, but I am looking for 1954-55 Topps Hockey in PSA 8 or 9.

I just hope he doesn't decide to start on a 1969 set. image At least not until I complete mine in 8 or better.

I seem to remember somewhere seeing him state that the 70 set is his passion because it is his birth year.

I can say I beat Chris on a 71T PSA 9 last summer, and it is now 1 of 2 out there (the second one just sold on ebay, and Chris said his snipe program crashed and he couldn't snipe it).

It was the last auction I won over Chris. He has since learned the snipe route.

Like I said earlier, nice guy, very cordial. I look forward to meeting him at a show someday.

  • Hi everyone, did not even know this thread existed until Keith Abrahms let me know (andiehaley). To let everyone know what I do for those who asked, I together with four other people are the largest producers of Russian crime dramas, comedies and movies, which has been a good market recently with the rebound in Russia, we own a newspaper and basketball team in Israel (really working hard to keep these operations profitable given the economic problems in Israel) and I also invest the money of my partners and myself in a number of various public stocks, bonds and currency futures.

I spend a lot on cards, but it is a reasonable amount of my liquidity relative to my overall income and I have really enjoyed the chase on 71 and I really enjoy the set and even though it is expensive, I am not into collecting necessarily to flip the cards, so a bit of a high price here and there is okay for a set I plan to keep the rest of my life - same on the 53 Bowman Color, which is a difficult task, but hopefully I have a long time ahead of me to finish it.

    All the best to everyone

    Chris
Collector of baseball PSA sets from the 1970's & hockey rookie cards; big New York Rangers fan (particularly now that they are sleeping with the enemy with Holik and Kaspiritus). Also starting to collect 53 Bowman Color as I think they are the most beautiful cards I have seen.

Chris -- I misread your post the first time through. I swear that you said that your partnership are the "largest producers of Russian crime". I must learn to slow down on my reading.
  • If that were the case I could probably buy every baseball card ever made - lol

Interesting. I went to Russia in 1999. It was great to see a place that, before the fall of the USSR, I never thought I would be able to visit.

I have to say that it is great that there are collector's out there like Chris, people that collect for fun and not money. That's how it was in the late 1980's. I remember as a kid, never seeing myself being able to sell my cards because I loved them so much. Also it's good to have collector's who plan on keeping their cards for the rest of their life because it helps the supply part of supply and demand. It helps keep the card prices strong because the top stuff is rarely for sale.
