The Privilege of meeting people and the Registry

In the last few days a few of the extra Mercs were sold on Ebay. One of the buyers and myself got into a nice little Email discussion about the series, the Registry and other related topics. I suggested that he should come over here and take a look at the Boards and register his Dimes. From what I can gather he is a little reluctant to put his coins in the Registry at this time because he believes the set will not quite measure up. This is the second person I have had discussions with through Ebay transactions that seems to have the same impression that his set is not good enough yet.
In my opinion both of these folks should not worry about how good thier set is but should jump right in here for the advantages that are presented to a collector, the information, the relationships acquired and of course the chance to buy a coin that probably they would not see without being here.
How about some of you other folks. Have you also ran into some folks that have the same impression that thier set is not good enough but are missing the fact that much information and help can be had here ?

I am relatively introverted with respect to my collection, so I've never run anyone who collects but doesn't post here.
But as far as your acquaintance goes, I see NO reason to be "ashamed" of ANY set of coins. The Merc people here are especially good--I enjoy the camaraderie, the help I see being given, the "grief" given when someone gets a particuarly nice coins, etc. Amongst the Merc collectors, I see NO trace of snobbishness, that is, no one says "MY set is better than YOUR set and therefore you are scum." Indeed, there is only a little of this in evidence at all, and none whatsoever amongst Merc fanatics. So, I think you should insist () that your buyer register his puny, miserable, stunted, trivial () set here!!!!

Personally I enjoy chatting with other coin collectors and have learned so much from you all. That is more important to me than getting to #1.
Tel him/her to put it up and let it grow

the boards here for a few months, and only posting comments for a few weeks, but it has
already shown me a few things and put me in touch with someone who had a coin that I
had been looking for for a long time. There is no reason not to jump in!
Very good topic. When I listed my set, I was #3, that was the day it all started, now at 9th, I still am just as proud of my set, even if it were the 50th set. It is so much fun, to hear all the BS on here, most of which is very funny, but it is informative. I have not run into anyone like that, but by all means, let them know we are all the same ol' guys, even if our set is #1 or #50, we all share the same great interest, Mercs!!!!! Tell them to come over and talk a while, and soon they will put that set up, for sure.
Thanks Ken for the topic.

IMHO no one should feel intimidated by other sets or their owners. As I said in a similar thread,I've made some good friends of some of the people I'm in competion with.I've helped them and intern have been helped by them.My Registry set has grown and improved over the last 2 years.

Great thread. I am glad to see you have converted one, and hopefully the second will follow. I think the Mercury collectors are the best bunch of collectors on this board! (Can you tell I'll a bit biased?) I am one of those people who know my set will never break into the top five, and I am just as proud of the set I put to gether, as the person on top of the list.
The help from Mecrury collectors on this board is second to none! I would like to join the crowd to welcome the new registry lister and hopefully the second.

Getting your friend to register his set is 1/4 of the battle. Now you must convince him to join in with the group of posters here. I think the comradeship, jocularity, and wisdom of the Merc collectors and most of the other collectors are what truly makes the PCGS (and NGC) site exceptional!

collect should be a little bigger, like say a half dollar.

No one should feel that their set is insignificant. We all have to start somewhere. When I registered my Merc set in January 2002, there were a total of 34 sets (the varieties set didn't exist yet). Only 2 were 100% complete, the #6 set was 75% complete, and all of the sets below #11 were less than half complete. Some of those sets are now gone or are inactive, but many have grown by an impressive number of coins. We now have 77 basic sets, and 28 varieties sets, with some duplication, so it doesn't appear that most Merc collectors are intimidated by the "big" sets.
The friendly competiton, having a goal, and the comraderie here on the Forum are the things that make the hobby enjoyable, and Merc collectors are the best!

I can see your point if you are a bear, Mercs would be hard to handle, and hard to see. But for a "Mercateer", they are just right!

I'm very much looking forward to Baltimore as my first convention to meet other collectors! Hopefully some from this forum.
With regard to the size issue (ahem!) the nice things about half dollars, is that that you can actually see them with the unaided eye as you get older and your eyes get worse!
