Current value of a PCGS PR68 1938 Jefferson nickel?

I know that the pops have risen and that the price has fallen recently. Do any of you folks have any current pricing information available? We just acquired one and I want to price it fairly. Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • I saw a pre-50 Jeff in 68 at Long Beach. Asking price was over $6K. I don't remember the date but I don't think it was a '38. I remember a post by Wondercoin who liked the '38 better than the other dates...

Thanks, Carl. We have it priced at $4250.

I think that price may be right (especially if the market is able to absorb the new ones made lately). It is a reasonable asking price.

Mark: I just sold a very pretty 38 Jeff in PCGS-PR68 last week to a collector for less than your asking price (and bought it for even less, of course, from a well known dealer). While I think the 38 nickel may have been selling for $4k-$5k+ as a pop 1 or 2, now that the coin is hitting pop 9 or 10, I would be surprised to see the coin maintain roughly that level.

Carl: You may be referring to a 41 proof (pop 2 as I recall) in PR68. While the "asking price" may have been around $6k no one came to the party at the auction and I suspect that date might also become available at some fraction of that level in the not too distant future (no guarantee, just my suspicion).

  • That may have been the coin Mitch. I don't remember the date, but I remember the look. It was hazy around the rims. You really had to catch the light just right to see nice color in the haze. Perhaps the lighting there wasn't the best...
  • coinguy1 - I'm not questioning the grade, but I looked at your image at pinnacle-rarities.com and wonder how it made PR68. It makes me wonder if I'm looking at the Jefferson nickel too strictly... or is it just the scan??

    Mark aka coinguy 1,

What did you pay for the coin? Or did you pay for the coin?
Are you just brokering the coin? What do you stand to lose?

Don't you just like it when I pick your brain.Iam anxiously awaiting your comeback
