Logos on 1981 MSA/Peter Pan/Sunbeam Discs?

I recently purchased one of these, and was wondering whether anyone knew if these discs had any logos (similar to the '76 discs) on the reverse. The one I purchased had no such logos, but does have MSA in the label along the edge. Any thoughts?

the only way to get out of paying mlb royalties. they still had to pay the players assoc but not mlb properties.

  • So, I assume by your statement that unlike the '76 discs, this "blank back" disc is the real deal? If so, were there any other company's discs distributed? I would imagine not, since it would be kinda difficult to differentiate without the logos.

i believe that MSA stands for michael schmier (or something like that) associates? i do know they produced quite a few sets without the mlb logos. as far as the blank back one you are talking about i assume it's the real deal but couldn't tell you the year.

  • Well, the year is definitely 1981 (it says so on the front). I was just hoping someone who had gotten some of these things graded would see this and confirm whether or not I have a "real" Sunbeam/Peter Pan disc. I'm looking to send it in, but if it's not legit, it's not worth the money.
  • Gtbeaker,
According to the 2003 standard catalog of baseball cards:

    1981 MSA/Peter Pan-Sunbeam Bakery Discs

"Only the MSA copyright is found on these 2-3/4" diameter player discs, the names of Peter Pan or Sunbeam Bakery, the sponsors which packed the discs in loaves of bread, are nowhere to be seen. Like other MSA disc issues, the black-and-white player picture appears on a baseball design with side panels in various colors. Player information appears at each side and in the center panel, along with the Players Association logo. Because the discs are not licensed with the leagues, uniform logos have been removed from the photos. Backs are blank. "

There are 32 players and commons are worth $6.00

  • gtbeaker,
If you email me, I'll send you a scan of a graded Stargell 81/P/S Disc...the holder for the disc is so large I can't upload onto this page.
Someone that knows how to add scans, give me a hint and I'll try adding it here...
    mine is j.jlinnens@verizon.net.
    The reverse is blank.
    John

  • The holder is the same one used for Isaly/crane etc. its an oversized one that Red Man cards fit into
  • dbj77- Thanks alot for the info from the catalog. Sounds like I might need to make an investment in one.

Motocrosser- The scan won't be necessary. If you say your graded Sunbeam Stargell has a blank back, that's good enough for me.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to waste a submission by sending in a "fake" card. Thanks alot for all your helps guys!
