A question about selling a set

I am seriously considering the sale of my $2 1/2 Gold Indians to pursue some other set collection.

I am wanting some opinions on the best way to do it without getting battered on the price. It seems to me that I can:

1. Consign - Pay a sellers fee
2. Sell the set as a whole on E-bay
3. Sell the set - broken out individually on E-bay

Can I have your thoughts?

Thanks,

Dan Cheatham

  • If your set is top $$$ then consign, but if not break it up and sell it on ebay (a long as you have good feedback). That is what I would do.

Good question,im thinking of doing the same with my Merc set, same reason.I think a lot depends on the grade of the coins.I myself would sell them on ebay.Do you have a good following on ebay, with positive feedback?.If so there is no reason you cant do it yourself.
If not, maybe a board member who sells on ebay may work out a deal with you..

Hope to hear more input on this.Al

Sets usually do poorly on E-Bay; small time buyers looking to fill holes inexpensively. Individual coins on E-Bay do fine but you must put a bit of elbow grease into the equation via picture taking and advertising. I can't really comment on auction houses such as Heritage or TeleTrade because I have not consigned any merchandise to them, as of yet, but I'm inclined to go that route; especially with merchandise in the high dollar volume.
  • Thank you all!

I'm nervous about doing anything because I've grown attached to the coins and it took me so long to put the set together.

I have quite a bit of my collecting capital tied up in it that its keeping me from buying other coins.

Put it on e-bay two or three times at YOUR price as a full set. Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. And if it doesnt sell... your only out $3.30 per auction.

After that, it's just a question of where you can get the most money. I generally think you can do better on e-bay than a auction house on coins in the $50-$500 range, especially once you concider those fees for the big auction houses. However, in the $500+ range, you have a better chance of things going for "crazy money" by consigning to one of the big auction houses. The draw back to that is, you have little to no control over the minimum bid. Sure you can place a safty bid, but you'll still have to pay the fees if it's a no-sale. I guess it's give and take. I'd definatly try it as a group lot on e-bay first, though.

    Dan,

Make sure you know what kind of $$$ you want. Research the items for sales on ebay - this will tell you if ebay is a realistic method. If you are not comfortable with doing the listings yourself, solicite an experienced ebayer from these boards; a bunch of theses guys do a lot. If you have a price, consider asking for PM's and you could offer the set whole or in parts on theses boards - I potentially would be interested. Hope this helps.

    Dan,
Having viewed your set, I would say this - you have a few PQ pieces which I don't think would bring full value, if sold (individually or as a set), on Ebay. I would suggest consigning the coins, either to a major auction house or to a dealer.
