How do you pronounce "Sacagawea?"

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
I had always said, "Sack'-uh-juh-wee'-uh"

Then I just saw on the Discovery Channel a program where the narrator pronounced it:

"Suh-kah'-gah-wee-uh" Sure sounds more Indian to me.

  • Say what you will but they are a hot comodity right now. this will more than likely be the last year so I guess people are being fueled by that.
  • I still think that the dollar coin can be saved. The Mint needs to continue to make them but use a silver metal content. image

Suh-KAH-gah-wee-uh is the way it's pronounced by the woman who modeled for the coin (Randy'L Teton).

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Sa-Cah-ga-we-ya was the way Steve Ambrose pronouned it when we heard him speak at the Great Falls visitor center a few years ago. It was new to me but all the folks in the know seemed to nod in agreement, so I assume it to be the gospel truth....my kids hit it off with the great grand-daughter of Sargent some-one-or-another who was on the expidition. We had a great time.

Did you know that they have found the privy locations of the expidition....marked by mercury from the pills they took for whatever ail'd them....used for syphilis too, at the time.

I'm convinced that only she knows... and she's been dead for a few years now. Fortunatly, there arnt any English words that sound remotely close to "Sacagawea," so it's hard to confuse it with something else.
