Forgive Me PCGS... I Have Been Across The Street...

... and I registered a type set of nickels while there!

Does anyone have any advice? Should I shower?

How long does it take them to process registry additions? It looks interesting; a guy with a 60% complete set leads slugs like Keith and I who have 100% complete sets.

  • I like that set. I only need the Shield nickel with Rays to finish that set.

I find it very hard to figure out what coins to use. I put in an early PR 67 Jeff (1938) and only recieved a few points. I switched to a PR 70 and got 200. I left it at that. Now I checked that Krispy set and that one has a 1994 SMS MS 69 FS for 1200 points! Well I have that coin too so will change that for an additional one thousand points. The SMS coins is the cheapest of the three and has the most points!

Biggest farce is that they give equivalent scores on the Lincoln set to PCGS and NGC coins! Yeah, right! image

I noticed that on the Krispy set... I put in a modern 67FS then I saw that... I'll need to switch mine. Maybe I can pass Keith!

It seem that it takes about 24 to36 hours before the coins go into the sets.

It's a type set, so date rarity doesn't count. They use the most common coin possible's points - so put your highest graded coin in the set.

I really, really like those denomination type sets.

Ah Ha the old NGC points debate. image Best to just enjoy and forget the points and whos slab it is over there. Thier Registry does have some good points and features. PCGS are you reading this.

Kripsy's 1994 nickel is a MS69 FS not SP69. Plus NGC does not appear to designate FS on SP coins.

  • Bill, Krispy's coin is a PCGS which does designate FS on those special coins (the '94 and '97).

TDN, here is a case in a type set where I take out a 70 DCAM and replace it with a 69 FS and gain 1,000 points.

Mine are PCGS also and Say 1994 MS69 FS SMS on the slab, NGC put mine in as SP69 with no FS. Me thinks they goofed because they only gave me 36 points for the same coin.

Either Kripsy's coin is a reguler MS coin or they left off the SMS which NGC designates as SP.

    Carl,
    My 94 Jeff is a SMS MS69FS.

    Bill,
I guess that means I can't get 1,200 points ofr a $100 coin. I am much more proud of the 2001-P 67FS anyhow.

I have my set registared at NGC but not PCGS. It would just hack me off not to be able to put my NGC coins in the registry (even with a penalty), so I dont have them registared at PCGS. I agree, there are a lot more overgraded NGC coins than PCGS, but there are a lot of accurately graded coins also.

  • Well if I can't gain 1,000 points for that coin, maybe we can bring Krispy down by that much image I checked the certifcation number and it is a SMS coin...

The 1994 & 97 SMS coins in MS-69FS are flukes. Someone has asked NGC to look at the scores on those coins in the Type sets because of that discrepancy. It takes usually 24 hours or less to get your coins approved for entry, barring holidays and weekends, although sometimes the NGC staff can be found working late.

And Brian, odds are that you WILL pass me on the nickel set, because I'm "downgrading" my Jefferson from 66FS to this 66, non-FS:

Jeffersons can tone real nice sometimes. I have a 43-D in MS66 I don't want to get rid of even though I have the same in 67FS.

I have a Type Set and a Morgan Set over there. I like being able to use both PCGS & NGC coins in it. I'm not worried about points and just have interesting coins registered that I like and grade be damned.
As far as the PCGS Set Registry and the "elitist snob" quest for points & rankings on beloved plastic goes........
Well I have 4 or 5 PCGS Reg Sets that are pretty high in the rankings too.

Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
