Where are all of the complete type collectors?

Just curious why so few people seem to participate in the complete
(1792-1964) type set. I had a few months while I was moving where I
dropped off of the top 20, but I am now at 21 and heading up.
Having said that, my collection IS NOT anything to brag about!!! There
should be THOUSANDS of people out there who could register a better type
set than mine. Where are they all at?? Now, I'm doing the complete type
because I enjoy it; and don't worry about the fact that I can't afford gem
uncirculated examples of everything. (Hey, a VF 30 no drapery quarter
demonstrates the type just fine!!) I just don't understand why this set
isn't the 221st set instead of the 21st set.

I'm here (R.S.Gore Collection). I agree with Carl it is pretty daunting. looking for the right type, right toning/blast white or RB/full red. Grade considerations, difficult to find some of the types etc....

I started mine as a numismatic journey to gain a greatter appreciation for the coins and our history of coining. It also requires more reading about the series too.

I think that the complete type set would be the ultimate set, such variety. I'm currently #6, but the folks ahead of me have very serious deep pockets. I will never finish it because I do not consider any coin that they made less than 1000 really meant for general circulation.

I'm working on it. But I've just broken the top thirty. Carl Wohforth has helped me a lot - thanks. I have coins coming in this weekend, so I'm looking to make a move. But RobGetty, you are right, the grades of coins that I'm buying in the 1800's don't belong in a top twenty registry set. My 1700's stuff is another story......

By the way, whose got some mid grade Barbers for sale?

    Thanks,

  • It seems to me that a lot of people aren't putting sets up because they don't have the 'perfect'
coin. But I have never yet seen someone on the boards insult someone for the quality (or lack
thereof) of a coin in their set. Yes, the complete type set is a very daunting task; but it is a great
lifetime project. (and even if most of us never make it, the journey is most of the fun!)

There ain't no perfect Chain cent or Flowing hair dollar that 99.9% of us can afford!!!

  • I beg to differ. My Chain Cent is perfect to me! (PCGS Poor 01) That is a coin with character,
and it can tell a story!!

I suspect that most type collectors have a mix of PCGS, NGC, ANACS and raw coins (and possibly a few other assorted slabs), and the motivation for the registry is less than when you are going after a run of dates, or a commem set, or something more homogeneous.

I'm another. I'm only registered in the C/N/S set. I could go into the complete, but I only have 7 of the gold coins and want to pursue the CNS ones first.

Hey - are you the guy who keeps bumping me off the front page?

I'm down to #22 now. There used to be a set named "Life Goal #11" which I think sums it up pretty well.

  • I didn't bump you this time, but we have played musical chairs a few times.
Right now I'm one up on you in 1792-1964, and you are 1 up on me in Modern Proof.
(By the way, I've got a few coins coming for Modern Proof; Here is your fair
warning to get your Platinum Eagle Proof to finish your set before I finish mine!)

I'm just waiting for PCGS to get all the way back to the 1872 year sets...I'm hoping to be active in all of those except the proofs with gold set. It'll be great to have some friendly competition there even if I'll be trailing by a wide margin from the get-go. So far I've already lost two killer coins due to bad cash flow this year (1872-S Half MS64 and 1872-S Quarter VF25); maybe I'll be able to wave enough cash around later to get them to come out of the collections they landed in. I'm also working on a nice mid-MS graded CNS type set.

Hmmm....doing a complete type set is so much effort that there is not much time to work on doing a "PCGS registry set."

I used to have a "complete" type set listed at PCGS, but I delisted my set for a couple of reasons. First, the set ends at 1964, and the US Mint has struck coins a few times since then. Secondly (and more importantly), many of my nicest coins are in that other grading services' holder. I have a set listed there, which includes all the coins that I own.

Oh yeah, that other service weighted the Type sets as one of their first things. So that silver 1958 Washington quarter in MS-67 does NOT get more points than my 1804 Draped Bust Half Cent in AU-58 across the street.

You won't have to worry about passing me there. I'm easy. I made most of the coins myself, so I've got PR67DC Ike's, and the only PR70DC's will be the ones I make myself.

  • Hey Relayer,

Notice I didn't say PASS YOU, I just said FINISH! Even if I completed my set today,
your set would still probably rank higher while missing a coin, since you have FAR
superior coins in your set. I am but a poor, humble coin collector, trying to fill empty
    slots in his collection!!

When I started to try to complete the U. S. Type set I decided to represent all seven mints as well as including proof coins and mint state coins. I have tried to add coins that are very rare as well as key coins to make the set more desirable. Since I have dropped to 10th I guess I will have to start seaching again for some nice coins. I sure would like to find a nice 1851-O trime about MS63.
