I see that there is a very rare 1975-S PRF70DCAM POP-1 Roosevelt on eBay for sale with an opening bid of $3K and B.I.N. for $3,650.
If I remember correctly, didn't Steve Stokely own this coin? Also didn't he state in a post that he owned the coin for some years and when he decided to sell it to Heritage, that when he looked at the slab that it wasn't a 1975-S dime and that he was going to send it back to PCGS for a correct slab?
So...is this a new coin? The pop report still shows 1. This coin shows no pedigree. Anyone have a clue...just wondering

I could piece the threads together for the story, but here is the nutshell:
Stokely had the only known 75-s PR70DC for a long time. Then Stokely decides to sell through Heritage. Heritage examines his coins and discovers that the coin inside the 75 holder is acutally a 1977!!!!!!. So back to PCGS it goes. I'm sitting back waiting for this coin to drop to 0 on the pop reports. BUT NO, it goes to 2 for about three days! I just can't believe it! The the pop goes back to 1.
Then I compare the submissions that showed up from the previous month, and there were 100 PR69DC's and I know somebody is pounding the pop report, and must have popped out another 75 in PR70DC. I asked about this just last week.
Then tonight a kind person sent me a heads up on a 1975-S PR70DC up on EBay. I looked and low and behold a freshly holdered PCGS pop 1 lay before my eyes. Since this was the only 70DC hole for me from 73-99, of course I couldn't let it get away.
Some (even myself) may think I am a fool, but when you've got to have it, and there is no real expectation that there will be another, you do what you gotta do. No way I'm paying $2800 for the 99 that sold last night. There will be plenty of those. But 1975's?????????? No way.
Doug: The "hook" in set building
One of the reasons I chose patterns nickels from 1865-1896 to collect next (I've gone about as far as I can with silver Wash quarters - when a coin becomes available now, it is usually simply priced too high to add to my set for the scintella of improvement that oftens accompanies the "upgrade"), is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to complete a set. With that issue out of the way right from the outset, there is far less pressure to do what you "had" to do here. The US Mint struck something like 400-500 pattern nickels during that era and only roughly 150 are even obtainable in PCGS or NGC slabs. The other 250 are either unique, impounded in a museum like the Smithsonian or the Byron Reed, or otherwise unavailable. There is really nothing to "complete" and no one to "compete" with, simply collecting for the pure joy of it.
Having said that, Doug, I totally understand your situation and also congratulate you on the purchase.
Wondercoin
I knew it had to be a different coin if Steve had his set pedigreed. I don't follow the reports that close, so I wasn't aware that it was at 2 for those 3 days.
I gotta tell ya that I'm in awe at what you've done with your dime sets. You have really set the bar high!
There is a 1966 sms MS68CAM on eBay, and I am the high bidder and I noticed that that would also be another top-pop up-grade for you. So...what do ya say?

I still have over a week to decide to bid higher.
Good luck,

I was thinking of buying a high grade Statehood quarter instead anyway.
