How do the grading services grade Ultra Rarities? 1804 Dollars, 1913 V nickels, etc.?

Is it on a "grading curve"?

The actual grade for a common coin plus one?

Any thoughts?

Good question. I would HOPE that even ultra rarities are graded with the same standards as non rarities. If not, then the entire grading spectrum would be out of whack.

Of course from time to time we wonder if ultra rarities are crossed to higher grades so that one grading service or another can claim that such-and-such rarity resides in its slab. Hmmm.

  • Unfortunately they do not grade ultra rarites on the same scale. Some coins get better with age, wasn't there an 1804 dollar that went from PCGS 45 to 62. I guess rare coins like fine wine get better with age.
