Hi all,

Thought I would post a picture for some eye candy image The picture is not as nice as Supercoin's 1976-D MS68 25c, but there are 16 out there and not really any pictures, other than Keith Dagens "P" mint in his retired type set.

    Ken,

For the record, I now have a nice MS-66 of the date, and the MS-67 I owned resides in Mdwoods Type set.

    Mitch,

That is probably the only bad thing about us "Type Guys". We take coins away from wonderful sets, just like the one you have going image The good thing is there are 15 others out there. Good luck hunting.

    Keith,

Glad to hear from you. I still have that Ike and someday I will try it for a 67. Anyway, I'm not sure but I assumed the coins/Kennedy set Mitch bought was from MdWoods. Not sure, I checked and didn't see a set registered to him. Glad you found another 76 Kennedy image They are tough.

Ken: Yes, I did buy Mark's Kennedy set this week (which had some splendid coins in it and I am very grateful to mark), but I also had a nice selection of pieces on hand going back a few years ago to the time Registrycoin (Steve) and BCASICAN (both tied for #1 in the Registry) both sold me their sets so I could present them to the current #1 set holder for him to select the very first coins to build his first collection of MS Kennedys (since that time greatly upgraded by #1 of course). I also had the privilege to buy Braddick's Kennedy collection a while back which contained a few wonderful coins. My favorite is a 1995(d) Kennedy in PCGS-MS68 which is very "PQ" - I tucked it away so nicely, I haven't found it yet - but I will. image

You have to give a tip of the hat to Richard Green, a consumate collector. He has been #1 in just-the-right-place-at-the-right-time sets since the inception of the registry.

    Mitch,

You're sounding like you've been bitten by a collector bugimage Also your set has made leaps and bounds! up to 77% I think when I last checked it. Just a good example of the quality coins you have and just how easy you can help collectors build a top notch set, in no time at all.

I for one have my eyes on those 1964 kennedys. I know it maybe compairing apples to oranges, but one thing I'm not savy on is I saw a 1964-D on DHRC for $950.00 I think. The mintages not being to far apart on these bicent. and the silver 1964, but the 1976 pops are about half. I know silver is softer than clad and easily falls prey to bag/contact marks, but the clads are prone to strikes with less detail and many hairlines. Seems to me the bicent. halfs would and appears tougher to obtain in the ms67 grades and one would think they would command a higher premium.

Anyone else have any comments to share on this? I sure do need educated on it. image
    Thanks,

Cointime: The bicentennial coin is also a one year type coin. The simple reason is
that many people simply won't collect any coin made after '64. The interest in these
later coins has simply never been as high. Only in the last several years have people
been looking at many of the post-1934 coins including the '64 Kennedy.

Many of the '76 halfs were set aside, but people didn't really collect them so much as
horde them or keep them as souvenirs. Very few were made like the one pictured in
this thread and very few people used to seek them out.

Ken: As you know, it is very hard to stop collecting. Most dealers I interact with have some collection going at any given time.

I agree with you on the 1976 vs. 1964. For your information, in working up a price on Mark's set, I just figured the 1976 at well over the price of the 1964's. You mentioned DHRC having a 64(d) at $950 and then mentioned that you might be able to buy the 1976 at 1/2 that price (not sure that is true anymore on the 76(p)??). But, I do not recall ever seeing a 1976(P) on their site - perhaps that could be a $1500 coin if they got one in??

The Kennedy coin has been going on now for nearly 40 years now. When the "clad" coins from 1965 and up really start getting into vogue, I have little doubt this series will become very popular.

Once the series ends, too, it'll be a rage of popularity with Collectors. For some reason, Collectors do like to see a beginning, a middle, and an end to a series.

Any predictions on when the Congress will allow the Mint to stop the Kennedy presses?

    Pat,

That's a good question. When will the presses stop? Is this a political question? Some unwritten law that it must be minted for so many years. I am thinking like you, that once it does stop interest will pick up and you will probably be kicking yourself for selling your set image There is no real demand for them other than the rolls/bags the U.S. Mint has been selling. I would guess within the next 5 years they may stop. Just one more SMS collector coin to start the fire.
