What's the main reason that 3-cent pieces aren't very popular?

These coins seem too reasonable considering their mintages and population numbers. Not many people are excited about 3-cent nickels or 3-cent silver pieces. Do you think their small size is the main reason? Or perhaps it's because we don't use that denomination today?

Do you think that these series will ever be appreciated?

Maybe they're too small? I happen to really like them- silver especially.

Just too small. I love a wild toned MS 3 cent silver, but they are just small to really appreciate the beauty!

3 cent silvers, gold dollars, and to a certain extent, half dimes, suffer from being very small. have you ever tried to handle one of those little things without either dropping it or pinching it between your oily fingers? its tough. give me quarters, halves and silver dollars, or if it's gold, half eagles, eagles, and double eagles. something i can hang on to. even dimes are a little unwieldy for me.

I like trimes and gold dollars, have a couple of each, just dont touch em much.

  • Just a few posts in and already several "it's too small" statements! I'm so sick of hearing that! image

BTW......at one time that coin was big enough to purchase a postage stamp.........exactly. (i believe it was the reason for it's creation.) So in a way it's closing in on purchasing power equal to a current half dollar! Big things come in small packages!!!!! image

The small size is not enough of a reason as to why they are not very popular. The $4 stellas are not much larger and yet they are incredibly popular,

The combination of small size, non precious metal, odd denomination amount does hurt the popularity of the 3 cent nickel. Even the 3 cent silver coins are more popular and in fact are increasing in popularity.

    Michael's piece is in a word....awesome!

I agree they are to small that whats why the half dime was replaced with the nickel.

There aren't many nickel 3c pieces like Michael's -- personally, for attractive but non-monsters, I'll take the silver 3c.

With that said, given my aging eyes, I wish I could see them!

  • Personally, I love the 3 Cent Nickel in Proof. I am particularly fond of blast white examples, but do appreciate looking at toned beauties like those Michael showed us.

I agree with Michael that this series is undervalued, which makes it better for me and my pocket book. image But I do hope, one day, to see this series take off in popularity.

As for the 3 Cent Silver, I haven't gotten around to collecting them yet, as I have too many other sets going on right now. But I do like the coin, both for it's looks and for it's historical value. Another undervalued series, IMHO.

    Hey guys,
Stay away from my territory. I am happy with the ZZZZZ when 3C coins are talked about..image
Another reason that Trimes are not more popular is there is no good reference on them. If I had the time I would try to correct that need. Maybe in a couple years unless someone steps up to the plate earlier.

Probably size. As a kid I always coveted owning a three cent silver as I thought they were the coolest looking coins ever. I saw photos of them in the redbook, and wished I had enough money to buy one. When I finally saw one in person I was a bit shocked by its diminutive size, but still loved them the same.

I think I will put together a nice VF-XF set in three cent silver. Now that sounds really fun! Err...maybe I will stick to Type 1 and Type 2 coins. Seems the type three coins are quite scarce and more expensive

    Thanks for the idea!

  • I think that the coins are reasonably priced and difficult to obtain in Type 2&3. Considering that the mint melted much of the the issue in 1874, the coins are a real challenge to obtain, especially later dates.
  • Too danged small (the silver ones anyway). Bought a 3c silver for my type set last weekend.....I wonder how many of those fell out of pockets and purses over the years they were in circ without knowing it...

They're DINKY. The population is aging and they want coins they can SEE.

    WITHOUT a glass.

Shoot, a 3c silver is almost a MINTMARK.
