My newest toned Peace AT or NT!

Well I sniped one from Doug (uofa1285) any thoughts as to its originality

I believe those colors can be duplicated and I'm afraid PCGS will agree.

Pretty coin though and will look good in a Dansco (once it's returned).

    Whoogabuns!

    Pretty Score - 10+

AT/NT Score - hmmmmm wow! er - does it matter? image

To me it's bizzarre enough to make it real - I'd have to give it a good close look on hand - the reverse tells me it's real, perhaps envelope toning. It's pretty wild though - so 50/50 - but very very pretty!

These are not the right colors for NT. Sorry for the message.

  • Don't know what you're looking for but what about the obvious about 4 o'clock on the obverse? The rim's gone, where's the "T". Reverse same quadrant: "O" is worn, rim worn. Is this common of a weak strike?

Just to let you guys know, I expect a BB, but Doug (uofa1285) responded to my thread about a "possible" new Ebay Doctor and stated he believed the lot of raw toned Peaces he had up for sale were in fact NT. So I sniped one to send in to PCGS for a final determination and if it bags it'll be on the CoinReports website. If it slabs, well then I got a bargain!

It certainly is unusual and kinda pretty if the pic is a fair representation of the true colors and look of the coin.

Keeping my fingers crossed! But keep the opinions coming!

    Thanks

Frattlaw... I think you know by me jumping in at the first and giving my grumpy "eehhh" what I felt about the toning. Like you said if it looks like that with those colors and the colors haven't been enhanced, than I say it's a bunk coin. I don't think for one minute pcgs would put that in their holder.

But if it's all dull and funky looking that's another story, but even at that it doesn't look good. Glad you're sending it to pcgs.

  • I will be greatly surprised if PCGS doesnt body bag this one. I dont like anything about it. Looks like one for the coin reports web site!image

Looks better in person, due to the great luster, not represented in the pics.

I got destroyed financially on this one...paid $300 for it from a very reputable eBay/Yahoo dealer (and friend). I believe then just as I believe now it is NT.

An observation: Many of you seem fixated with PCGS/NGC endorsements for toned coins. Granted the market value of any questionable rainbow is markedly increased if it slabs, but even pro graders learned and objective opinions can be (dare I say it) wrong sometimes...they are not the final word in our hobby - just opinions. (That is why I do not live and die by either their grades or their AT/NT designations...buy-the-coin-not-the-plastic.)

Uofa 1285.... I agree and fair enough about the grading services making mistakes, or even calling something market acceptable when it's still not natural. I don't go by the services as an absolute.... but I believe pcgs is pretty sharp on not holdering too many un-natural coins. Now the other company I can't say the same thing about. That's why I told Frattlaw I was glad he was sending it to pcgs.

IMO though, even if some slight chance pcgs did slab it (if the colors look like the image) I still wouldn't agree with them.

Doug, I'm curious, and this question is asked, hat in hand, why after paying $300.00 for that Peace dollar yourself you didn't send it in for grading?
If PCGS or NGC were to holder that coin you would easily see your $300. back and thensome, I'd imagine.

Why sell it raw on eBay at a tremendous loss?

I too am curious why Doug did not send it to NGC/PCGS. Heck, even a SEGS slab would raise its value. Ironically, I doubt ICG would slab it- they have gotten tough lately on toning.

I am not a seller or dealer, per se. I just sell the coins I buy that I decide not to keep in my collection. I sold it on eBay hoping for breakeven or a gain. Usually I do not miss this badly but apparently most other folks see this as AT as well.

As for sending/not sending for grading...I rarely send coins in for grading, as I really do buy for the coin, and not the slab. (Although I love the protection and showcasing afforded by the holders.)

Hope this answers some of the questions.

I agree with Doug, PCGS and NGC are not the end-all-be-all of authenticity of NT vs. AT. They both make mistakes. Nothing is fail safe. And of course I do not have this coin in hand. I believe it will get a BB because it might just be too unusual for a slab. I honestly hope it is NT and gets a nice piece of PCGS plastic around it.

There are aspects of the coin that I think are real. There are also some which I don't like. Out of all of his coins, this was the most unusual and probably why it sold for the lowest amount. He had a golden/redish/blue toned 1922 which I know is real. I've seen several like it and have 1 that has been slabbed. This one though I've never seen this color scheme on a Peace before.

Doug -- if it slabs I'll post it and sing your coin's praises.

    I'll paypal you later!

    Thanks
    Michael
  • So, if PCGS does slab it, does that mean it isn't AT?
  • uofa1285uofa1285 Posts: 2,252 ✭✭
    Michael,

I hope it slabs too. If it doesn't slab, or once in-hand you don't like it enough to submit, I will extend a return option of 200% of the purchase price plus your s/h/i, as I do not hate this coin at all and would like to have it back should you wish to return it. Offer is good indefinitely, or until I am legally broke. (So you might want to think about something faster than the Economy submission!) LOL.

    Thanks,

(By the way, sorry, No paypal, as I have never registered as a collector of funds with them).

    Doug

i think its a cool coin, but enhanced in some way. Did it get bb'd or slabbed yet?

As a Buyer of these coins you're right. You are buying the coin and not the slab- no need to holder it. But, as a SELLER there is then a strong need to have it holdered only if you're interested in recieving what the coin is worth.

With all that said though no one can argue those terms for a refund! Nice.
