Coin designs: good vs. bad

Many worn Buffalo nickels have no dates because of the way the coin was designed. Not that the coin doesn't look nice, but I think it would have been better to design it such that the date wouldn't wear off so quickly.

Can you think of other coins that leave something to be desired as far as their design is concerned? What would you have done differently?

Standing Liberty quarters are another good example as well as the halves. Not so much the dates, but the heads on the coins.

To me the poorest design ever put on a u.s. coin has to be the 2 cent piece, that coin is the generic design of all time. That doesn't mean there aren't pretty 2 cent pieces, just looks like someone took 2 reverses and put them together. Les

O.k., i'll spell it out, the 2 centers that russ has are pretty, the nicely colored piece thats up for an ebay auction that was the subject of a thread here earlier is pretty, but the design itself is boring, generic crapola. Does anyone here think the 2 cent design is pretty, artistic, or imagenative ???? Les

  • Yes, the 2-cent piece does look like two reverses put together. So does the shield nickel. Does anyone know why they didn't use a portrait of Lady Liberty on these coins?

This, coming from somebody who loves the Barber design - and uses WebTV.

    Bwuahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

All right, maybe the Two Cent piece isn't a work of art, but it is very historic in many ways. I like history.

Russ, the Barber design blows away the 2 center and the 2 cent design just blows!image

The appearance of coins as they wear out seems to usually not be a consideration
when coins are designed. This is a major oversight and many coins look much worse
as they wear. Personnally I always thought the buffalo nickel retained it's artistic
value even in lower grades despite losing it's numismatic value far earlier with the loss
of it's date. Two other coins that seem to almost improve with wear are the Barber
designs and the high relief Washington quarter 1932-1986.

There are numerous world and ancient coins which seem to incorporate such consider-
ations right into the original design.

I like our US coins, yea, there have been some ugly ones, but they are still part of our history. Just because some dates wore off of some beautiful coins (Buffalo, Walkers, and Standing Liberty to name a few) doesn't mean the coin was ugly. In matter of fact I would love to see designs like those return to our circulating coinage. (The best commemorative to date is the Buffalo Dollar-IMO).

    Russ,

They are called Proof Silver Eagles (for the obverse anyway).

    Russ,

    I agree!

Now, could you imagine if they did the entire US type set as commemoratives! I wouldn't want to miss a single coin!
