Rella, Here is where I stand on 1872

I'm very curious as to why you also are into the 1872 year. I picked it because I was born in 1972, so I just went back 100 years, without thinking about some of the keys and semi-keys that I was going to run into.

Here is what I've got so far. Hopefully my income will pick up to the point where I can make a serious run at finishing this.

    Rob,

I've got a LITTLE catching up to do...not counting my assorted raw coins I only have two SO FAR. I'll probably pick up the pace over the rest of the year but as with you this is a lifetime goal. I love the year for the wide variety of types in business strike examples...I started out looking into the 1871 for the same reason that you took on the 1872 but when researching decided that the 1872 year set was a little easier and the key dates were much more undervalued. I also just made up my mind to collect the proofs for this year at some point in time; I've never seriously collected proof coins before. The gold proofs might never happen but hopefully the rest of them will be someday. I also have some darkside 1872 stuff on my wantlist but I'm not going to go after those until I have a better base in the US. I'm really impressed with the 3CS in MS60...please let me know how much you want for that one if you upgrade it.

  • I'll agree with you on the gold proofs; they would be nice, but sure are pricey.
For some strange reason my wife gave me an evil look when I suggested buying
an 1872 PR65DCAM $3 gold piece (Hey, what is $18,000 really? Who needs a new
car (or food on the table, etc.))
I need to finish up the silver proofs; I blew a chance to get the half dollar 18 months
ago, and haven't seen as good of a deal since then.
Keep me informed as to the progress. Good luck in the search!
