1943-S Lincoln Cracked Head

BlackhawkBlackhawk Posts: 3,899 ✭✭✭
I saw a 1943-S cent in a coin shop today that had a prominent die crack going across lincoln head and continuing to the right rim. The MM was also doubled. Does any forum member have any information on this variety.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill, I have heard of the "D" mint with repunched "D" but not the "S"-------------BigE

  • For the 1943-S Lincoln cents, there are 5 different re-punched mintmarks known, 16 obverse cuds (4 of them are retained breaks), 10 reverse cuds (8 are retained), 1 of these is listed in both catagories because it has a cud on both the obverse and reverse (matching). Maybe the coin you observed was a pre-cud die crack. The information above was taken from "The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents" by David W. Lange

There are more than 5 known 1943S RPMs, I have more than 5 different ones...but a die crack does not make a variety. Many dies developed die cracks, doesn't make them special.

I finally got around to putting my 2002 SQ's into the intercept album and ran across a Tennessee clad proof with decent sized crack. KingCoin's argument was cracks are rare on modern proofs. Anyways, since "spiked chin" and "scar face" were already taken, thought I'd call it the "George on a stick" variety (die state variety, that is.. they get "names" too, apparently image).
