Why Do the Services Charge More to Grade Some Coins over Others?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,222 ✭✭✭✭✭
I plan on having a couple of coins graded at Long Beach for one day Service both with PCGS and NGC. Reading the policy I see that each Service charges about $100.00 for coins valued over $1,500. and about $55. or so for coins valued under. NGC even offers a $35. price on gold.

I wouldn't mind paying the extra if I thought the Graders spent more time grading and evaluating the more expensive coin. Do they? If not, and the same energy is spent looking at a $2,000.00 coin vs a $200.00 coin, and the holder is the same (time spent typing up the insert?) why are Collectors charged an extra $45.00?

I'm sure there is some logical explanation I'm simply missing.

Could it be for insurance reasons? Suppose they take in only $100 coins, or only $10,000 coins. They will be liable for much more if their coins are only $10,000. Otherwise, it could also be the assumption that higher value coins are more likely to end up in a holder anyway, so why not?

    the logical explanation is greed.

they know that if you have an expensive coin and want it in their holder bad enough you will pay it.

I would be surprised if a 2,000.00 coin received much more attention than a 200.00 one.

There are 3 types of service: Good, Fast and Cheap.

    You can pick any two.
