If that is the coin you got off Ebay, it was a beauty. I already have a 65 but I was sorely tempted to bid on it, till I saw you were on it. I am surprised that it didn't cross to a 66. I wonder if you cracked it out some day and resubmitted it, it might go. What grade were you thinking it deserved?

I was hoping for a 66 but knowing how NGC coins rarely cross at the same grade I was very happy with the 65. In fact, I indicated 65 as the minimum grade I would accept on the submission form. Honestly, I think the coin lacked a strong enough strike to warrant anything higher than a 66. My fear was it would grade at PCGS lower than a 65.

This coin and a second NGC crossover have been added to my rainbow registry set listing, and -- wow --- this set is now in the top 20 and on the front page. Gosh -- two mentions on the front page -- first for my first registry set which is still #4 of all time finest though sold, and now the rainbow set at #18 current finest.

  • Alan, nice going! I remember that one and it looked killer with the toning. I have a few toned Wash. proofs in next door getting slabbed and i'll let you know how they turn out. image

Alan: What do you have in your 1938 slot? I have (2) spectacular "color coins" I plan on trying for PCGS-PR68 at Long Beach. I believe one coin is close to a "lock" to make it and the other is "knocking on the door". If the second coin does not make PR68, would you like first shot at the PCGS-PR67 specimen? It won't be "cheap", but the quality should be sensational. Let me know.

I've updated the descriptions of the 1936 and 1953 proof washingtons which were just added to my "rainbow registry set," and one of these days I hope to post photos. When? When my son "has time for me."

When my son looked at the 1936 proof tonight his first expression was "the rainbows grew!" You might remember that when I crossed my 1950 proof washington from NGC to PCGS the rainbow toning appeared to grow and intensify for a couple of weeks.

I'll be keeping a close eye on these two -- both crossed from NGC holders -- HOPING to see some stronger colors show up.

Is there a chance?? Or did I use up all my luck on the 1950?

    cheers, alan mendelson
