Is it Now Time? PCGS Should Grade/Athenticate ALL Coins.

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,222 ✭✭✭✭✭
Is it time yet? NGC (NCS) is doing it. SEGS too. And, of course ANACS has been at it for awhile (along with PCI): Grading Problem Coins. Instead of a bodybag your coin(s) would be holdered with a different PCGS insert denoting the problem.

I think PCGS is pretty good at detecting problems that some of us miss. Instead of having the coin returned and the new option of then having to spent more in submission fees to sent it to NCS or ANACS (if at this point you still care enough to have the coin holdered!) PCGS could deal with it.

There are many beautiful and worthy coins out there that are not Problem Free, and to NOT holder them because of an issue or two doesn't make much sense in this new day and age.

Who knows? Maybe down the road PCGS might even allow these "problem" coins into the Registry (at a strong discount in points, of course!).
I just think it is a field that deserves more attention and brainstorming on the part of PCGS.

Do you?

David Hall addressed this in the Q&A forum. He said that when they asked their dealers if they wanted this, it was shot down. He said they may bring this up again in the future.

And, I should add, I know of 3 different dealers that believe like me and none that don't...Ken

I believe PCGS should holder all coins that come through the door. If a coin is holdered by PCGS as a problem coin I believe it is more likely to stay in that PCGS problem coin holder. This means that a newbie will probably not get taken by being sold a problem coin raw that has been cleaned or whatever.

PCGS should listen to the COLLECTOR ON THIS ONE!

HAHAHHA You read my Ask NGC post on the NGC board?
PCGS already charges you the holdered price so they may as well slab it instead of putting it in a bag of shame.

"Problem Coins" play a large role in early U.S. coins, some varieties do not exist without scratches, cleaned, etc. Why should they be ignored? Some sell for 5 figures. The collector is the ultimate customer of the grading service. Novice collectors will be better protected against renegade dealers who sell body bagged raw coins as no problem coins on ebay etc.

I know the best protection is knowledge and experience in grading, but this can take years for new collectors, if they have not dropped out of the hobby from getting ripped off.

it's been time for, ooohhhhh, i dunno, maybe the last ten years???

stupid, very stupid, to automatically assume that a lightly cleaned 200 year-old coin has no market value

of course, doing so will cut revenues, as you won't sent the same bb-ed coin in 5 or 6 times until it finally slabs, right?

Dog, I didn't, but what do they say about like minds?

I don't mean to disparage David Hall, but which Dealers stated they were apposed to this idea? And, why would they be?

I think PCGS should slab problem coins. This would be an interesting poll.

Ahh...so HRH polls ONLY dealers to get the pulse of the market? Well who the hell buys from the dealers?

He should poll the COLLECTORS! They are the ones who ultimately buy that piece of plastic.

Furthermore, I know quite a few collectors who cannot afford a high-end coin and are relgated to collecting problem coins. I'm sure that THEY wouldn't mind a coin in a bodyslab nor would they have a problem submitting their coins to PCGS for slabbing. Also, I think people would feel they got a little more value for their twenty-five bucks if their problem coin was returned in a slab rather than a five-cent baggie.

I raised this issue in another thread some time ago. I think this is long overdue.

Just my two-cents...scratched, tooled, whizzed, and bodybaggedimage

I'd be much happier if they did (unless I specified not to do so).

I have about 65 coins that will be going to ANACS because PCGS won't slab them (and some they have never seen, but I know they won't slab them).

I just wish I had a decent box like PCGS and NGC does to store ANACS slabs in.

Edited to say: I should mention that I don't sell coins so it's not a matter of money as I don't really care how much a coin is worth to someone else. I like to have them slabbed because I feel it protects the coin.

I hope you can convince them to do it. I asked the question in the Q&A forum for the very reason I would like all of my coins in similar holders. Of course, for that to work, they would have to attribute varieties too.

Maybe if they do, I'll submit the coins on my Holey Coin Vest!

    ...NOT! image

Seriously, it would be nice if the bodybagged coin got into a holder, at least, even if it had a bodybag label or problem notation. One ought to at least get a little plastic for the trouble and expense in submitting.

I say it is time the coins were authenticated and holdered, at least, if not graded. I wouldn't blame them if they didn't want to start grading problem coins.

I would like to see this ahppen, I think after all you are paying for an opinion.
