1872 Amazonian Pattern Coins

I have always been interested in these pattern coins (especially the gold ones) because of their design. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find sufficient amounts of information on them through the years. In any case, I was wondering if anyone had any information that could shed some light on their history? Thanks.
