for anyone with scratches on their slabs....

i was going thru some of my slabs tonight when i noticed some scratches on the back of one of my slabs. upon closer inspection i noticed that the scratches were so bad that i couldnt see the VDB on the reverse of the coin. so i remembered this scratch removal kit i have that i used to get rid of the scratches on the pick guard of my 1974 fender telecaster custom. i figured if it worked on that it should work on the slab. it did. removed about 99% of the scratches. beats cracking it out to reslab it.cost of kit is 12.00.its called NOVUS POLISH AND SCRATCH REMOVAL SYSTEM. a company called THE SPA DEPOT carries it. they are in olympia washington. phone # is 360-956-3997. i have no connection with this company. just figured i would post this info in case anyone needed a solution to this problem.

  • Being a jeweler i have no problem getting out the scratches on my slabs. The same polishing wheel i use for gold rings and chains works great with a compound called "Fabuluster". Takes all the scratches out in a few seconds (works on plastic watch crystals also). A little wipe with a clean cloth or tissue paper to remove a bit of residue and it looks like it came right from the grader!

I swear this could be worked as a business...... to work the larger shows! I'd think a lot of shopworn slabs could be vastly improved and more coins sold if someone set up a small booth to refinish these at say, $2.00 each. I just don't have the time to travel, but during the slow periods some of the larger dealers could run a side business for the benefit of all.

No need to crackout a bad slab- just send it for a reholdering... $5 and it's in a new slab, no regrading... $12 would be for a new grade, as well.

  • I use a little rouge on a small buffing wheel that fits on my Dremel tool. As Joejeweler said--works well on plastic watch crystals, too.
That humanity at large will ever be able to dispense with artificial paradises seems unlikely. Most men and women lead lives at the worst so painful, and at the best so monotonous, poor, and limited, that the urge to escape, the longing to transcend themselves, if only for a few moments, is and always has been one of the principal appetites of the soul.

Brasso works superb!! It's cheap, easy to find, and unless you are really brutal with your slabs, will last a lifetime....or it should anyway. I've been using it for years and it really does the trick. WD-40 will take off the residual glue left behind from stickers.
