Why no designations on Proof Coins? FSB, FB, FBL, etc.---------

Just because a coin is struck in Proof state doe not guaranty that they will display all the qualities of the dies. A proof Cam or Dcam is a prime example of this issue! I own several Franklins, Washingtons, Mercury and Roosevelt dimes in Proof, proof Cam and Dcam, yet not all coins exhibit FSB, FB or FBL's.

Do you think it's time that all grading companies start this added feature to the grade. I know moderns are and exception, but most before 1965 are indeed questionable. The dies wear out the same as MS coins so why not dsignate that on proofs?

I don't think so. As far as Frankies are concerned, I think they've already published that the expectation is that they would be fully struck, although in actuality that's not always the case. If they stay true to form I don't think they'll go the route of adding that designation.

  • The dies don't get used as much as MS coins. When they wear they get replaced.

One of them was going to designate Full Step Proof Jeffersons. I've looked at loads of proof Jeffs and most have 6 full steps. Now those SMS Jeffs often have flat steps...

My incredible blue proof Mercury does not have full bands. I think many, if not most proof Mercs have full bands. This was the first one I saw without full bands.

The proof dies in the late 50's and early 60's were not replaced as often as they should have been, also the master hubs for some of the denominations were getting worn out as well. I could very easily see proof coins from that era not always having the full details that the designs were meant to show.
