Even some 69 Topps basketball in PSA 7 are hot

I know the 69-70 and 70-71 Topps basketball sets are really hot right now in PSA 8 or 9 grade. However, 7's can usually be found for less than SMR. The Chamberlain card usually sells right in the SMR range ($160). This card is almost double the SMR which seldom happens for 7's.

Ouch, I sold a raw one of those about 3 years ago for $60 (paid $35) that would have probably been about a 7. I figured at the time, it wasn't worth grading. That's one I wish I had back right now.

That is the best looking 7 I've seen. The corners look like a 9
  • MRC2, I agree, a great looking Wilt card

i'm sure there are others out there like me that don't have the bankroll to compete with these guys bidding on the 8's. i've deceided to work on my set in 7 and have been bidding on 7's and have also noticed the increase in interest in this grade. guessing we will see the 7's continue to remain strong as long as the 8's are at these amazing levels!! i say...go for the 8's so i can get the 7's cheaper!!!!!! tim

I'm building the set in mostly 7's, but lowered my sights to a relatively nice 6 Chamberlain and a 5 checklist. I'm also building the '70 set in mostly 7 (nothing lower). I think they look great.

While we're on the subject (sort of), what's the deal with so many 70s BKB cards having the player wearing their jerseys backwards. I always thought it was so the art department would be able to know who was who. But that stopped making sense when I realized there are about 5 times as many baseball players and you never see any reversed jerseys on those cards. Mabe Topps just had no basketball fans back then.image

  • Helionaut, I'm just guessing here, but I think it is because Topps didn't have a contract with certain (all?) NBA teams. For instance, I can't think of a 1970-71 Knicks player with a "correct" uniform (however, the playoff cards at the end of the set have correct jerseys, which shoots my theory to heck image).

It's kind of like the mid-1970s football cards. Topps had a contract with the NFL Players Association, but not with the NFL teams, and therefore had to airbrush the logos off all helmets. Fleer had a contract with the NFL teams, but not the NFL Players Association, so they could show correct helmets but could not identify individual players (which led to the bizarre and unpopular "in action" sets of the early 1980s).

Does anyone else have a better (or more correct) explanation?
