Hi all image Yes I still have a smile on my face. One thing for sure. Things are in a constant state of change. As you look at my grades below. You will see I got a few body bags. Do not dip your coins even lightly. A couple times in the past, I have sent in raw coins, in original condition like a 1964 nickel that didn't get the grade I thought it would and I made a call. I was told that it was a little dark and if it was dipped it would probably go another grade up. I have experimented with a few different coins and dipped a few, you know to get that grey over cast some clad coins get and have done really well. Until this time.

Ok. I'm not complaining, just pointing a few things out that are not up to snuff. Just a quick run down of the coins. All the 1c and 5c were in U.S. Mint sealed cello. I really like the 1c 1994-P pop 6/0. The next thing is as we have discussed before about how the pops get messed up. The 1994-P 5c was attributed as SMS and it truly is not. I cut it from the mint set myself. Most of the 10c were dipped and I think IMHO some should be "FB", but only 2 show being cleanedimage The 50c were not dipped. The 1976-P has the most beautiful toning and I thought a shoe in for MS67, the 1976-D has light striations on the reverse and I thought it to be a shot at MS67 but would get a MS66 image got the 67 and the other 1976-D that was in a mint cello looked as good if not better (no toning and super strike) than my current MS65image As for the Ikes, both bicent are both better that a couple MS65 and MS66 I have, and probably will be the last Ikes I send in.

Now I don't think (since I have to work tomorrow) I can call before the coins are shipped, so I will have to wait till I get them to at least fix the 1994 SMS 5c. And to maybe see what I can do about the dimes, like the 1967 that IMO is a business strike and not SMS and a couple others that s/b "FB". Like I said at first, I'm not complaining, just sharing.

  • Another lesson I hope you learn , is what is worth sending in? Several of your slabs are spenders. I just can't understand sending
all these common coins in to be graded? I hope you know I am trying to be helpful. Lord knows why. All these common coins are
going to be recognized as very common over the next couple of years when the pop reports give an indication of how common they are..
Watched dollars in 65 go from 800 to 80 and then even lower. Expect the same with this modern stuff. Best of luck.

    Rusty,

You make some good points image I do have to disagree with some of what you are saying. In some of the modern coins there are condition rarities. Like the 1976 half. The pop is now at 16 for the "D". I have looked through many mint sets. Besides being weakly struck they come with their share of bag marks. This in it self makes a tough coin to make in MS67. If we move our comparison to silver. Have you ever tried to make a MS67 in 1964 50c ? I have, and so far to date I've made a 63,64,(2)65, and one 66. They are tough, yet the pop is more than this 1976-D MS67. Today the online shows in 1964 50c (p) 27/1 and in "D" 24/0. I recall these going between 600.00 and 800.00, so besided needing this coin for my type set and the thrill of the hunt, I feel pretty good about these type of spenders. Don't get me wrong, cause I was hoping this would open many areas/topics to talk about. I clearly to not admit to knowing everything and would like to here more about why and how you feel the way you do about moderns. One thing I would like to throw out is I think not as many people saved as many rolls of modern coins as when silver was in circulation. Thank you for you thoughts and any further comments you may have.

  • Ken,
I still buy original bank wrapped rolls of 64 Kennedy half dollars. Lord knows how many are still out there. The same with the 76 rolls.
I have not played the game with modern coins, but there is a fortune to be made right now. Maybe I have been a dealer too long.
Best advice is to buy for condition and not date. If you travel you will still find little stores that have original rolls that can be bought. Bank
wrapped is the only way to go. Best of luck.

Rusty: I just did a deal with Ken for just -1- coin off his list, which paid for all 24 grading fees, the cost of the coins themselves and yielded him several hundred dollars profit on top of that (not to mention 23 coins he is now into at $0). And, I am "tickled pink" at the deal he gave me on the -1- coin. image

    Mitch,

    Let me guess which one.

Could it be the 1994-P Lincoln in 68 Red?

For me a truly impossible coin to find that nice.

I was thinking that 76-D Kennedy in MS67.

    How tough is that?

    Mitch,
    Thanks for explaining the

    << <i>condition rarity >>

part in $ and cents. It really puts it in perspective. image

    Bill,
The 1994-P was still in the cellophane and clearly not a SMS coin. Now I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but it may be a new grader. I recall DH saying they have another modern grader and this could explain why none of the dimes went "FB" and most of the coins IMO was graded very conservatively. Its gonna be hard to break the news to my wife, that she may never finish her 1965-present dime set or at least get some "FB" to add to it. Maybe I will have to sell it. I've got some email traffic going and time will tell.

Braddick, hi. Take a look at my type set image But most of all it's up to Mitch for any additional details image

Jay: You are RIGHT ON. image Pat- I would love the 76(d) Kennedy and if I was offered that coin (Ken - please write), I have no doubt the submission batch would have yielded our friend Ken:

    1. All 24 coins grading fees paid for
    2. All raw coins paid for
    3. A fabulous 7 day "Mexican Riviera" cruise on Royal Caribbean, including a lovely room and spending money for the week

NOW, I WONDER WHAT "CLASSIC COINS" KEN COULD HAVE BOUGHT RAW, SUBMITTED AND SCORED LIKE THIS ON? Truly, how many "average" (sorry Ken) collectors ever turn $50 in raw Morgan purchases into multi-thousands of dollars overnight (without an incredible knowledge of varieities) image

    Mitch,

I can see it all to clear. My wife and I with one of those drinks with an umbrella sticking out of it. Sweet! image

Warning! Pat do not read any further!

Mitch, do not tell Pat about the beautifully toned and prooklike fields on the 1976-P Kennedy half that will be in a 67 holder someday. I may want to start a set myself someday image

"I can see it all to clear. My wife and I with one of those drinks with an umbrella sticking out of it. Sweet! "

Just like those American Express Travellers checks commericals:

THIS MAN SUBMITTED "MODERNS" TO PCGS AND IS ENJOYING HIS FABULOUS CRUISE WITH HIS WIFE - DON'T THEY LOOK GREAT ON TOP OF EACH OTHER ON THE FLOAT IN THE OUTDOOR POOL image

THIS MAN SUBMITTED SOME RAW MORGANS TO PCGS HE BOUGHT AT THE SHOW - TOO BAD IT DIDN'T WORK OUT FOR HIM AND HE WAS FORCED TO VACATION IN BAKERSFIELD, CA THIS SUMMER. THE AIR CONDITIONED BUS WAS SURE NICE THOUGH

Ken. I read. I know. I was warned.

    Now I've got the shakes.
I know there is a Commandment somewhere in the ten that tells me NOT to covet your 76!

Maybe if I close my eyes and sing the matra, "I don't want that coin... I don't want that coin. . ." it'll pass.

Somehow though, I strongly doubt it! image

    Mitch:

Yeah, but would the price you are paying for the 76D cover the cost of the 10,000 mint sets he had to go through to find it.

    Greg,

I wouldn't say 10,000, but I actually looked through close to 50 mint sets, bought 3 mint sets, 1 roll, about a half dozen singles and finally found the 76-P and 76-D at a local show a few months ago and bought them both for the sum of 2.00 each image I could not get my money out fast enough image Which equates to..... Not everyone is into this Registry competition craze and they truly IMO have no concept of modern rarities. Good thing for us there is still some low hanging fruit image

The '76-P half isn't too tough in proof like, but most of them have a lot
of marks and poor strike even in proof like. Gem PL's are gorgeous for
this date and while much tougher in the '75 set are equally pretty. The
buy/sell spread on mint sets tends to be very low and often it's possible
to find someone else's sets to look through.
