Please, I need three cent silver help!!!!

image First I have Cherrypickers both old and new, Breen's book and a few others.
I recieved a three cent silver in 1862 date and looks vf-xf. I tried to scan several times, but can't enlarge it enough to show the detail. The legend of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the obverse and stars on the reverse are doubled.
The question, Is this normal for that little sucker? Any help on this would be nice to know!

Thanks

    Jeff,

Your 3CS may have had the legend retooled/reworked. Or it may have experienced machine/strike doubling. I would think the former. Very common like Jon said.

There is an overdate for the year 1862, 1862/1. It should show clearly under magnification if you have one.

Thanks guys! I imagine that the mint had an extremely difficult time trying to hold this little booger in the collars. It is funny that it is only the area around the rim and didn't affect the date stamping.

That would tend to indicate that whatever it is, it occured during the preperation of the die. The date was the last thing punched into the die before hardening. Possibly hub doubling or Longacre doubling. There is a fair chance that it may be machine doubling damage. that can also affect one area and not others.
