registry set question (about new sets)

I do not understand why there is no set for 3000 hitters and also no set for 500 home run club. These seem so obvious as collectors sets. Plus I noticed that they do have the cy young winners and the mvp winners as sets, so how are the 3000 hit or 500 hr club different? what is the trick to getting a new set listed anyway? do we need to send in a ton of cards before they will listen to you? or what?

LB - Its the old Supply & Demand theory. You must request a set, and then it works its way up to being accepted. Two things help speed up the process 1) if you list all the info, in this case all the members of the 3000 hit club & 2) if another collector or two also requests it. I notice they just added the 1956 Yankees to the registry, so apparently a request for that was in the works...jay
  • No doubt if you do the work they will get the set pushed through in no time. I've requested and had listed 6 sets so far. The longest wait was 6-8 weeks from request to posting on the registry.

If you do something like the 500 HR club, make sure you select a Rookie (if you are going that way) to be included for each player (I suggest a Standard basic set kind of card - instead of a boutique card like Kellogg's) Alternatively, you could go a different route and use the year card that they hit the 500th HR as the card for that set (most people tend to stick with the rookies for these sets though).

As to weighting, 500 HR and 3000 hit sets probably could be unweighted meaning they all get a weight of 1, but if you want to push the envelope, create discourd, generate controversy and discussion on the boards, go ahead and give them different weighting).
I've started and dropped the 500 HR set several times, but would love to see it on the Registry - I just want someon else to do the work.

You mean I'm a boutique collector? That's pretty cool....

BJ is very responsive in regard to adding a set. She will send a spreadsheet and the rest is up to you. I know the 500 HR set was a debate, as not many can afford the rookies of the members. If it was set up like a HOF player set, that would be just fine by me.

  • that was my thought, that it would be like the hof set where you can used the cards you choose. this is the same way that the cy young awards set and the mvps set are done. you can use any card you choose. how hard could it be to do this type of set for the 3000 hit and 500 hr sets? i will gladly do the work but do not know what or how.
  • Longball I've copied my recent email to BJ regarding the 78 Topps Reds Team Set, to show you what is entailed i nrequesting a set. Remember you first need to fill out the Set Request Form, including Cert numbers for 3 cards that will be in the set. After that, when you move up in the que, BJ will ask you to submit a list of the cards in the set and a proposed set weighting (see my earlier post about that issue).

    674 Knight RC 1 2
    700 Bench 3.5 6
    701 Hume RC 1 2

I included the standard set weighting and my proposed Team Set weighting.

they did not accept my proposed set weighting - oh well - I can lobby for my weighting later. Let me say the BJ is WONDERFUl to work with and will lead you by the hand if you need the help in getting a set on the registry.
