Diags of this 1803 coin

Unknown denomination

I have asked the seller for the diameter, but I am curious if anyone can read the diags and nail down the denomination and variety from these pix?

If not, you think its fake?

I've tried to match it up to a half, but can't find the variety, and it's not a quarter.

I think its a Draped Bust ,Heraldic Eagle reverse Half Dime?

    Or Dime.

If its about 16.5 mm across its a Half Dime, or about 19 mm would be a Dime.

Photoshopped only using the brightness and contrast parameters.
Note: Enlarging the pics much more and it looks too distorted with bigger blocks of solid colors.

I've seen this type before -- a total fake of an 1803 dollar.

Here's one up on E-Bay, properly described as a replica, and selling for $5.99 with no bidders:

Here's the image of the Replica, for quick comparisons with the unknown denomination coin:

Looks like a fake to me but I am no expert. Got out my Breen's and looked it up. The nose looks wrong. To round and hooked. I think it looks like the fake pictured in this thread.

Thanks guys...still no response from seller (not surprising after reading the consensus' take.) The old saying if it looks too good to be true, then its no good.

Oh Mark I,m sorry.I,m not insinuating your a chump.Dont get me wrong.
If you bid on it and get it it may still check out fine and you got a square deal.

Its just really hard to say from a crummy scan.

I hadn't bid on it, and based on the feedback received here, I won't. I do feel sorry for the sap who gets it.

I learned my lesson two years ago on a gold coin that turned out fake. Since then, I've been quite cautious.

The coin is definitely reeded and faker than a three dollar bill - somebody's gonna get a nasty surprise on that puppy... image

Cardinal is right the eBay item matches the fake he posted in his thread. Placement and spacing of Liberty is the same as the 1803. Both coins also apper the have the sme line or "crack" through the top of the date.

Sinin1, Without knowing the diameter of the coin in question you can't use the reeded edge as a reason for it being fake. The half dimes, dimes, and quarters of that era did have reeded edges. If you know that it is half dollar size or larger with a reeded edge then you can declare it to be a fake.

I got a response from the seller - my question was ->

    Was ist durchmesser?

    his response was ->

    Durchmesser 38 mm

  • tjkilliantjkillian Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭
    I received a similar response: <FONT size=2>
    Hallo
Die Münze hat einen Durchmesser von 38 mm

Basically it is silver dollar size. Being counterfeit, the auction is way over bid now.
