How many Standing Liberty Quarter varieties have you seen?

I have a 1917-D SLQ type I DDR. It's graded by PCI MS 61. It was in Coin World and Numismatic News in January of 1996. You just dont see varieties in the SLQ series. Has anyone seen or heard of any more?

  • Thanks airplanenut!! I appreciate it. Cline sure did want to buy it from me in 1996. But I just got it back from PCI after they held the coin for a month an a half. Well that's my discovery coin. image

    I saw

    basic four
    1916 type I
1917 type I (it is different from 1916 type I design)
    1917- 1924 type II
    1925 - 1930 type III

    1921s
    1921 type one
    1921 type two

    tear drops
    1920S tear drop with drapery
1920S tear drop without drapery (different die state)
    1926S tear drop
    1928S tear drop

    shooting star
    1928 shooting star
(cannot remember whether there is any 1928S shooting star. At least, I don't have it)

    1928S
    1928S large S
    1928S small S

    over-mint-mark
    1928 D/D
    1928 D/S
    1928 S/S
    1924 S/S/S are all fake
1920S S/S reported in coin world last month is not over-mint-mark since I have an early die state one. It is a die break inside S mint mark.

I like the pattern with laurel wreath reverse...although I have never had the chance to see it in person. I'm pretty sure that a circ. example was up for auction recently and that board member wondercoin won the lot for a client of his. Perhaps he'll notice this thread and comment...

Rella: You are mostly correct. I bought the pattern SLQ for a customer privately (it was not in an auction). The coin, in all of its glory, can viewed in my Museum of Coins on my website.

  • Thanks jcping!!! Do you have the one I have?

No, I don't have the 17-D type one DDR. I saw that one in Cline's case and at the time, the price is out of my range.

For some reasons, I never saw any 17-D DDR again. If there is a die pair for the date, some coins should be out there.

For the standing liberty quarter pattern coin, the one in Cline's collection is the only mint state (in NGC holder) one. You could see the picture on the cover of Cline's 3rd edition book.
