Would silicone harm coins? A bead around the slab?

Seeing all the hoopla about "Intercept" and talk about leaky slabs makes me wonder if running a bead of silicone around slab seals would be a good or bad idea.

Before slabs, I used to run Scotch tape around Capital holders and then trim with a sharp knife so you couldn't even feel the tape. Thinking being that it would hinder passage of air inside. Never had a way to deal with the screws.

  • I opted for STUF expanding foam instead of silly-cone. Fills them air holes right up.

YES, the gases released as it dries can be trapped inside the slab!

DON'T DO IT!!! Fact: Silicone chalk releases acetic acid which is basically vinegar.

Okay. Makes sense. Sure stinks when it dries when I use it on other stuff.

Back to peanut butter I guess.

"....that the draped bust Miss Liberty would be the one who would benefit the most!"

Temporary only, my friend. A few years down the road, there will be class action lawsuits alleging all the ailments Miss Liberty suffer due to the silicone. Heeh heeh heeh!!!

I'm sure glad nobody did that with the holder this quarter is in.

You are right Larry, the plastic is permiable and over time gases such as Hydrogen Sulfide will work there way right through the plastic. At typical atmospheric levels it will take quite a while. Higher concentrations will naturally work there way through faster.
