Lincoln collectors... your thoughts please.

DAMDAM Posts: 2,410 ✭✭
About 10 years ago I purchased a 1916 Lincoln cent, PCGS MS67RD. At the time the PCGS population was 8. Now the population is 14. But, as of Oct. 2001 the population was 10. In about 18 months 4 coins have been added to the MS67RD level.

What's up? Are fresh, uncertified coins being slabbed, or are coins being cracked out and submitted for regrade and the certs not being sent in?

I know this is one example of one coin. Any thoughts?

I believe it's a combination of both. Fresh coins are turning up and being holdered and others may be going for the upgrade and finding themselves back in the same- MS67, holder.

Also, wasn't there a slight problem with PCGS REholdering coins (say you wanted your 1916 in a new holder, out of the scratched up one) and accidently adding the coin to the POP report?
-I'm sure they've corrected that issue by now (?).

The answer is coin Set Registry. Collectors have nice coins in there collections.
But until Set Registries there was no real need to slab them. Who would know or care.

Two good points. I suppose it could be either, or a combination of both.

I just happened to be looking at one of my Type Sets and noticed the population of that particular coin had really jumped.

Just goes to prove pop reports are for reading only and can be dangerous in the hands of the unsuspecting. image
