PCGS MS50

I have a coin on approval graded MS50 by PCGS. When I went to verify the cert, it did not turn up on the web page. I called PCGS and they found it in their database. The gentleman I spoke with recommended that I send the coin to PCGS marked "Mechanical error" and they would relabel. First of all, its not my coin (yet) to do that. Second, what grade goes on the new label? Will they regrade, AU50 or MS60? It is really weird. Anyone else have a similar experience? Talk about putting the axiom "Buy the coin, not the holder" to the test!!

Thanks.

I would guess that it would be AU-50. A simple look at the coin on whether it is circulated or not would give a difinitive answer.

I would keep it in the MS50 holder myself.
  • I had a coin with an error in the label. Dealers are supposed to return said coins...

I have heard of similar circumstances where a non-MS coin was given an "MS" designation followed by the correct numerical value. I would have to believe that your coin is an AU50. Personally, I'm in favor of a Circulation State (CS) designation for all circulation coins to match the PR designation for all proof coins. If you have a numerical grade, then the PO, FR, G, VG, F ... designations are redundant.

Where's Pat Braddick, doesn't he have a one coin registry set with a mis-labelled coin in it?

Yes, I love(d) collecting these but have found that there are enough errors produced by ALL the grading Services each month that it takes away from the joy of finding something unusual.

The best "slab errors" are those with the wrong denomination on the insert although these "MS50" type coins are cool too.
Remember that Jefferson War Nickel CoinWorld showed that has an "MS"40 insert thanks to PCGS?

They are mechanical errors, and specifically I've found the number is correct it is the "AU", or in your case, the "MS" that is not.

(The best I have is a PCI "MS03") Commemorative.

    I saw that one too.
    PO01?

-Makes me a firm believer the grading Services should adopt the "BS.05" (BasilState) grade. . . image

Not only would I keep the mislabeled coin, but I would try to turn a profit on it. There is a particular error coin dealer (I would guess he's the biggest in the business and he happens to have his business in the Los Angeles area) who on the side collects all sorts of numismatic errors including misprinted red books, misprinted coin worlds, etc. in addition to his outstanding collection of error coins. He might actually be interested in this. cheers, alan mendelson

So what would a Anacs-P01 cross over to in NGC or PCGS?
  • I don't know what the big deal is here. Just about all the coins I send in are mis-labeled. They say MS69 when Clearly they are MS70 image
