A pretty, high grade, mint state Walker

This one just sold to a client, so, I feel I can now safely show it off.

Here is the goofy description that appeared on our web site (I wont tell you which coinguy wrote itimage ):

1943 PCGS MS68 Walking Liberty
Often, when describing truly special coins such as this, we start or end our descriptions by using a single word such as "wow'. In this case, we will use two words, instead -"oh my"! A glowing, lustrous beauty with delicate lilac and lavender patina, highlighted by traces of pink and golden-green at portions of the borders. The surfaces are amazingly well preserved and are without any noticeable imperfections. We could go on and on about this coin but will resort to "wow" instead. PCGS population of only four and one of the finest mint state Walkers of any date that we have seen. Oh my!

Mark, coins like this prove original is best. Les
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

  • Beautiful coin, Mark!

How rare is it to find a specimen with a fully struck left hand? I can't tell if yours has a well defined hand or not, but is softness in that area common?

    Thanks,

Dan, that is an excellent strike on Liberty's left (viewer's right) hand. For comparison purposes, here are images of that 1943 and another one, as well as one of a proof 1939 example:

    1) a different mint state 1943:

    image

    2) the MS68 1943 mentioned at the beginig of this thread - check out the superior detail in Ms. Liberty's cap and hair and the leaves above her left (viewer's right) shoulder, in particular.

    image

    3) a proof 1939 - a proof Walker will typically show about as much design detail as you will see for the type:

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but that "beautiful toning" would have been referred to as "unfortunate discoloration" in another era and brought less than a non-tarnished coin. Do Walkers ever get the stunning rainbow toning that one sees on Morgans from time to time? Now that would be coin to crow about.

Why can't you just enjoy a nice coin without trying to denigrate it?

  • Mark,

Why don't you provide a post of the 1943-D NGC MS-67 that you guys had for sale(I called on this one and found out it was already gone image ). It had pretty amazing toning too.

But for the scratches, I really like that rainbow toned 1943-D that Mark posted. I guess it is personal taste but I like flashy white over a coin with weak toning that looks to me more like "yellowing" than gold toning. Am I the only one who sees an analogy between the fairy tale of the Emperor's New Clothes and unsightly toning?

I hope Mark does not mind me posting this, but since it has been sold, I thought those that love toned Walkers would enjoy seeing this Gem. A 1940 S 50c MS67 PCGS and the first one graded as such. I believe there are just 3, this coin was graded in the early 90's and is owned by a California collector.

    Mark,

Thanks for your courtesy and I'm sorry, but that 40 S is now in a superb collection of Walkers and I doubt the collector will sell them any time soon. Thanks for allowing me some "play" on your thread!
