  • If I remember correctly the other Gary Nolan psa 9 went around $175. Possibly because it's a low pop Cincinnati reds player - i'm not sure why - but it sure brings a premium.

Is there not a lot of ungraded 1974 Topps around? These prices inevitably bring the submissions out of the woodwork and along with it, the subsequent price drops.
  • This is an isolated case for a 74 common. Two of the reasons for it are as Wayne stated...that it is a Reds player with a low pop but
it is also one of the tougher commons in the set with the o/c and printing defects that are very common to it.
Overall,I believe that 1974 commons pricing is consistent and just like any other set ,there are a handful of tough commons that will command a premium.

  • I hope that prices like these will bring more submissions for the low pop cards, like 277 Norman (PSA 9 pop of 2)and 559 chaney (PSA 9 pop of 3 or 4), because each time they have shown up I've been seriously outbid.

  • The Nolan is aone of the tough cards in this set along with George Theodore, Clay Carroll ... just always seem to have centering and other problems.... Jeff

  • I think of the Feliz Millan and Fred Kendall also when I'm thinking of tough cards in the 74 set. Both are pop 3 in psa 8. I think that it's too early to really know what the true low pop cards are in the 74's. I remember when doing the 65 set, the Joe Gibbon card was the only card to not have a psa 8 copy in existence so we all assumed it was the toughest card in the set. In reality, this is a very easy to find card in psa 8 or better now. Until more cards are graded, we won't know for sure which ones are the truly tough cards to find. But there are several that are very difficult to find right now.

I agree it is still a little early to say what is low pop and what is not. One trend that I noticed though is it seems like most of the Mets cards are tough. We all know how hard the Theodore, and the Millan are. Last time I looked the #645 Boswell did not have a nine graded yet, the Harrelson was still low, and a few others I can't think of right now off the top of my head. I would have thought there would have been more submissions of Met cards that there are. Any theories ?

  • I have the same complaints about low submissions of certain Reds Cards. #111 Carroll, 277 Nolan, 559 Chaney. But from what I hear, they are hard to find, much less find in gradable condition. The ones I have in my Reds Set I sent in for grading myself, and looked for several years just to find those cards to send it.

I figure that if a card still has only 1 or 2 PSA 9s today, then they must be hard to find, as compared with people just not submitting them for grading. Looking at the current pricing on some of these hard-to-locate cards, you would think if sellers knew the pricing they would be sending them in to make the $$$$ on the sale.

  • I think that a lot of folks don't consider 1974's worthwhile to grade. They see many of the commons selling for just a little more than grading fees but they don't realize how much the low pop's can bring. Tschaef, it's interesting that in the 74 set, the mets command the high premiums - not the yankees. I can certainly understand the reds bringing high dollars but why do the mets go so high? I don't have any idea.

I still need about 130 cards in psa 9 or better to finish the set. If anyone has extras that I need please contact me. I have quite a few duplicate 8's and 9's available for trade and would even do 2:1 or possibly even better depending on the card.
