Does this Barber half look ok?

MercMerc Posts: 1,646 ✭✭
I've never bought a NTC graded coin, but this one looks pretty nice. It is a 1895 Barber half.

1895

I took a look at some NTC grade morgans a month ago at a coin show. Some in DMPL holders were just semi-prooflikes. This coin looks nice but the holder scares me. I talked to one major dealer near me. He said he tried to get his coin into NGC or PCGS holders. Then ANACS is the second choice. If that is the case for most dealers, then why submit an expensive coin to one of the renagade coin slabbers?

My first reaction to the coin is that it has been overdipped - a shame because it looks like a nice coin otherwise. I wouldn't go beyond MS62 money on something like this.

It looks quite nice to me. Hard to tell if it has been dipped though it is very likely. THe biggest detraction for me would be existing hairlines. If the hairlines are very slight or none at all, the coin could possibly holder at PCGS or NGC. Hell I have seen a lot worse in their holders than the 95 Half!
  • about the only potential problem is the one frank brings up. maybe over dipped. other than that, looks like a decent coin.

  • btw, it does look like someone tried to dip off some obverse color on the left obv rim.

I'm with Arco --- it looks fairly decent. If hairlines do exist (I expect they will) and are not too bad, a major service will holder it. But it has been clearly dipped. Not my cup-of-tea.

It's been dipped (and as others have mentioned above, over dipped). I'd like to see it at other angles to get a better idea of exactly what is going on on the neck and upper jaw. Also looks like a number hairlines in front of the mouth. All this would limit the furure resale interest and value.

ok, I now see the slight splotchy discolorations on the left field of the obverse. I guess that is where some toning was removed. Still it doesn't look that bad. I noticed the bidding went from $208 to $265 in the past hour. Somebody is bidding on it.

  • NTC? You got to be kidding. Ask for a look see of the reverse. I bet that's where the real problems are.

Separately, 765 Barbie halves for sale on ebay today and only 2 PCGS!!!! What does that tell ya? 18 NGC.

Edited to add it is interesting the seller only says "certifed" and not NTC in his description. But on his NGC and PCGS auctions [2] he names them in the headline description. He knows darn well what he is doing and apparantly is comfortable doing it.

The reason it was dipped was to was the grafiti from Liberty's neck. Am I the only one who sees it? Am I going mad?

It's been dipped & is ugly for it with the residue but the best thing I can say is it doesn't look that bad which is about the same as saying it doesn't look that good. Just going from that scan I wouldn't crack it out and send it to PCGS raw because I think it may have problems with the chemical cleaning. Otherwise from what I see it may well be an average 64 but the severity of the marks on the neck could make it 63.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
