1977 Topps football Mexican version

Just wondering if anyone here collects this set. Are there many graded? If so, what do PSA 8s usually get? And how much do you think a Payton would sell for?

Here are the totals according to the current Pop Report:

    PSA GRADES ___3-4____5____6_____7____7Q____8_____8Q___9___9Q___TOTAL

    # GRADED ______3____7____11____96____2____115____9____2____2____248

The Payton, in high grade, would probably sell for a very high price considering there are currently only two graded examples - 1 in PSA 3 or 4 and 1 in PSA 6.

  • The 1977 Mexicans are almost impossible to find in decent condition. They are notorious for gum stains in particular. I have found all of the various Saints players, but in 20 years of searching I have yet to see one that I thought would grade better than a 7, and most are far from that.

I saw a '77 Topps Mexican Walter Payton SGC 88/8 NM-MT for sale last year at the Nationals. I believe the seller was Touchdown Teasures and his asking price was near $400? He specializes in non-mainstream football cards - the card may still be in his inventory.

There's a lot of this stuff for sale in unopened form on Ebay, but don't bother with it. First off, they come in packs of 2, but both cards can be seen through the package, so any chances of getting a Payton are nil if the box has been opened. Also, the gum is ALWAYS stuck to the top card, which ruins it. Also, the gum often presses through the top card and bends the other one, although that's not always the case. There are 4 card packs out there, where a couple of cards aren't revealed, but they're rare and expensive. So I'd buy an already graded specimen, because a) you can't get a high quality Payton from a pack, even if you could find one with a Payton in it, and b)they're so low quality that even finding good quality raw is tough.

Forget it. Those are amongst the rarest post-war football cards in NM/MT or better. PurelyPSA is right that there are also 4-card packs, and undoubtedly that's where the few high grade cards have come from. Sixdart is also right on about the single SGC 88 Payton - it's in Mike Hattley's (Touchdown Treasures) inventory, currently offered for $660. I passed on it in the last Leland's auction because it looked like a weak NM/MT to me, with weak T-B centering and two noicably worn corners. I doubt it would cross to PSA 8.

That explains a lot. I didn't know they only came two (or four) to a pack. I found it weird that with all the unopened boxes that usually sell on ebay, very few singles eventually followed.

Seems sort of weird, as 1977 Topps Cloth Stickers baseball was only issued in packs of two cards, yet they are very easy to find in high grade overall. I am sure the different stock has a lot to do with it -- but an intriguing issue nonetheless.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

If you can get your hands on a copy, the 1st issue of Gridiron Greats (Autumn 2002) has a featured article regarding these cards. It was written by Michael Hattley. He indicates their origin and the details of opening several cases.
  • I've gotten a couple of these graded and a few of the ones that graded out as 8's came from 2 card packs. Sometimes you get lucky and the wax on the non-gummed card isn't too bad. I think the majority of the cards that come out of packs that don't have gum on them would grade out in the 5-6 range.

The BBC Kid has packs of these on his website for 10 bucks. I dont know if they are the two or four card variety though.

  • I'm pretty sure they're two card packs. Four card packs have been going for about $35-40 on eBay recently. I haven't seen a box of those things in about three or four years.

Just open up a few Mexican 2 card packs last month. I sold off the stained and nasty cut ones. Here are the better of the cards. This can give you an idea of the quality of the 2 card packs.

    Oscar Roan
    Ed Bradley
    Neal Craig
    Garo
Notice the nasty notch on the right and the bottom right corner. Pack Fresh!!!

    Hope this helps
