Jeffersons....six steppers...grading and opinions

As stated in an earlier thread I picked up a very nicely toned raw MS 65 1942-D with six solid steps. Some day I will be able to produce a picture. I am heavy with PCGS '42-D's in MS65 and MS66 FS's. Both are in different registry sets.

Should I keep it raw (which is no problem) or have it graded? PCGS will give me the usual FS designation but I want the "six" steps to be obvious.

You make the call.........

Personally I would like to see PCGS identifying 6 step coins on their holders.

Simply, less than 5 full steps no "FS" designation, 5 full steps with no nicks, bridges etc. gets a "FS" designation, 6 full steps with no nicks or bridges etc would get a "6FS" designation.

This would be the easiest way for PCGS to implement and it would add value from a collector standpoint. Many Jeffersons are common with 5 full steps but may be extremely rare in 6 full steps

Now to your question - keep it raw for now.

    hey frank

that's a simple and undeniably sensible change PCGS could make. have you suggested it to them in any fashion?

also, am i correct in my understanding that on 1990 and subsequent issues 6 Full Steps are required for the designation?

I just posted the question on the Q&A Forum (5 vs 6 step coins). Maybe we will have a response next week.

I'd agree with all of the above and second Frank's motion for the 6FS designation. That
would set some coins apart, for sure!

  • This may not be an option you're comfortable with, but if you send to NGC that's verfication of six steps, since they do not designate 5 step coins, only 6 step jeff's receive the NGC Designation.

GQ, I would send it to NGC. I recently found a 45-P with 6 steps. the 45-P is not too common in FS (5 steps) but not rare and can be found with no major problems. However a 6 step coin is rare. NGC only has 1 graded as FS (6 steps) to testify to its rarity. NGC shows 27 graded as FS (6 steps) for the 42-D.

Again good advise. The coin has very nice toning and I like the white backround of the holder....giving some coins a nicer contrast.

Clackamas....that top ''20'' page on the circ. Jeffersons is getting harder to stay on!

Love my Jeffersons (And all coins)......enjoy your coins....

Yeh, no thanks to you image. Be prepared to be #20 late this week or early next week. I will be filling out the majority of the 42-50D's with FS coins image I sould be adding 11 coins and upgrading some others, albeit if PCGS can get on the stick with my submission.

    Cheers,

  • Here is the response from David Hall on the Q and A forum: (designation of 5 vs 6 steps)

"I feel that the 6 step designation should be left to the ultra specialists at this time. I think it is similar to Mercury dimes with "full bands" and "fully rounded bands." I think the 6 steps designation might bring more confusion into the market place and may be a negative."

Brian....great job, I like to hear that. Someone once said that the registry is the "Whitman" album of our youth. I agree. The competition is fun but I admit I just like filling in the holes. Remember the "holes" that had the cardboard punch-out for the rarer dates? I think the 1916-D Mercury had one.

I wonder if PCGS will open the Circ. Strike front page up to maybe forty or fifty soon. The top 20 will be 100% complete any time. The top 10 sets are cut in stone and some of the finest sets that are going to be assembled are there (check out their coins and pop numbers....very nice). The bottom of the front page is going to be a race. You, Boston Bob, Bama Boy, R. Romero, Krispy's, Lilhuff, myself and others are not letting any grass grow under our feet. Don't count out Timmygeez and Chewbacca keeps improving. It would not surprise me if Keets is the sleepers and shows up one day with a killer set.

Keep having fun......Life is good....enjoy your coins

David....thanks for the time and input. I agree that Six step designations would and will cause a problem. I guess we can be happy knowing that we are "ultra specialists" once in a while.

    Enjoy your coins.......
