Free Gradings

Hi. Has anyone had the experience of getting free gradings which they were successfully able to use on coins of a different series? What I mean is this - supposedly the free submissions for 90% completion are for crossing over other coins of the same series, or grading raw coins of the same series as the one where the coins were earned. Do they stick by this? What if you don't have any other coins in that series ie if you have 100% ? You lose your gradings? Please share your experiences. image

  • Yes the freebies are for any coins in that set that is 90% complete.

Pennies make dollars, and dollars make slabs!

  • It's my understanding that if your set is 100% then you don't NEED the free grading and therfore you don't get the free grading. If you are 90%-99% complete, they will give you free gradings for THAT set. you must contact them for an authorization PRIOR to sending the coins in to be graded.

  • So you think that a 100% set would get screwed over? Someone who was totally loyal to the PCGS brand would get gypped? Really? Any other thoughts?
  • I wouldn't say you're getting gyped. It's a nice perk to help you FINISH your set. I have never used it, but here's the exact wording of the perk.

Free Grading. We recognize that not every coin in every important collection has been graded by PCGS. In order to encourage participation in the PCGS Set Registry program we are offering the following free grading benefits for sets that reach 90% completion:
If the set composition is 1-9 coins you are entitled to 1 free grading.
If the set composition is 10-24 coins you are entitled to 2 free gradings.
If the set composition is 25-49 coins you are entitled to 3 free gradings.
If the set composition is 50-99 coins you are entitled to 4 free gradings.
If the set composition is 100+ coins you are entitled to 5 free gradings.
Free gradings are for coins within the set that has reached 90% completion. All coins must be submitted at one time. If your set has reached 90% complete and you have not previously received free grading for this set, please contact setregistry@collectors.com for an authorization code. No free gradings will be permitted without this authorization code, so be sure to write the number down on the top of your submission form. These free submissions are for coins within your set that are either "raw" or graded by another grading service that you would like to "crossover."
  • But that's my point. If you are wholeheartedly loyal, you lose the perk. If you stray to the other grading companies, you get rewarded. Why? I don't get it? And are they really that picky, or can you slip in coins that aren't from the same series?

You do get the gradings for 100% complete sets. I just received some yesterday. They must be used for coins that will fit into the set you earned them in.

You can get the free gradings once per set and you can get them at 90% or anytime above that, but only once per set.

The gradings must be used for coins within that set, and they must all be submitted at the same time (each set). So if you have a Jefferson set, you can get 3 gradings of Jeffersons sent in at the same time, etc., etc.

I've gotten 12 so far (3 for each of my 4 type sets) and can get another 10 for my other sets that are 100%, but I'm waiting on those.

  • 90% complete and #free grades depend on size of set and have to be coins that you send in have to be part of that particular Registry set. At least that's my unserstanding.
PCGS sets under The Thomas Collections. Modern Commemoratives @ NGC under "One Coin at a Time". USMC Active 1966 thru 1970" The real War.
  • Has anyone had any experience in convincing PCGS to let them grade coins from other series with their free gradings? Or is this rule solid as rock, no leeway...

    docday2003,

The whole point of the free gradings is to get you to make more sets. The free gradings are good only for coins in the series. I doubt you would have anyone at PCGS allow you to bend that rule. I have sent a few coins in for the free grading when my sets have reached 90% or more. They give you an authorization number, and you must submit the coins with a printout copy of the set the free gradings are for.

    Hope this helps!
